Not quite as good as others in series, Maybe Not great for kids scared of the dark

This is book 7 in the Magical Animal Friends series, modeled after the popular Rainbow Fairies books (same formula, two girls encounter a magic being that introduces them to a very "fluffy" version of a magical battle between good and bad). This book is my 9 yo daughter's LEAST favorite so far of the first 8. My 7 yo enjoys reading these series as well, but she has not read this one yet. My 9 yo reads at an 8th grade level and reads these books in ~20 mins, my 7 yo reads more at 3rd grade level and usually reads them over the course of two evenings at bedtime.
Parent Rundown:
+ It is not necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this one, so if you have a young girl who likes foxes, she can enjoy this story.
+ This is a beginning chapter book designed for budding readers, but can be enjoyed by girls through mid-elementary grades.
+ No potty humor.
+ This book actually teaches a little bit about foxes / nocturnal animals, which is more than some of the other books have from an educational stand point!
+ Books contain magic and fantasy as well as an evil witch, Grizelda. My 9yo comments that Grizelda never really does anything which eventually makes for anticlimactic reading.
+ Plot summary: The Fuzzybrush Fox family sees something strange in the sky in Friendship Forest just as the sun sets. This book features the third dragon sent by Grizelda the Witch since the introduction of the dragons in book 5. Smudge the dragon blocks the starlight from the sky, causing the leaves to fall from the Friendship Tree, which would prevent our two heroines from visiting Friendship Forest anymore.
+ No animals are actually injured, but the Fuzzybrush Fox Family is turned to shadows. Grizelda makes a brief appearance. The plot is resolved when the two heroines along with Ruby fox perform a dance and get Smudge to join in and reverse his naughty doings. It's a little ludicrous, but Smudge ends up as a friend.
+ This book ends with a cliffhanger for the finale in Book 8. So though your child doesn't have to read book 5 or 6, they will probably want to read book 8 pretty badly.
+ If your child is afraid of the dark, your child may not like this book as much. There's a lot of tripping around in the dark / animals being turned to shadows before the silly resolution.
+ Neat page or two of picture puzzles in the back.
+ Expect the content to be a tad vapid, as the Rainbow Fairies certainly were, but these books encourage children to read more when they need a mental break from school work.

About the Author
Stanley Baran earned his Ph.D. in communication research at the University of Massachusetts after taking his M.A. in journalism at Pennsylvania State University. He taught for 4 years at Cleveland State University, eventually moving to the University of Texas. He led the Department of Radio-TV-Film’s graduate program for 6 of his 9 years in Austin and won numerous teaching awards there, including the AMOCO Teaching Excellence Award as the best instructor on that 40,000-student campus, the College of Communication’s Teaching Excellence Award as that college’s outstanding professor, and Utmost Magazine’s Student Poll for best instructor. Dr. Baran moved to San Jose State University in 1987 and served 9 years as chair of the Department of Television, Radio, Film, and Theatre. At SJSU he was named President’s Scholar as the University’s outstanding researcher. Now, he teaches at Bryant University, where he is the founding chair of that school’s Communication Department. Among his other experiences shaping this book are service as a Fulbright Scholar and his many years of professional activity in audience research, writing for radio, and producing for television. Dr. Baran has published 10 books and scores of scholarly articles and sits or has sat on the editorial boards of six journals. His work has been translated into half-a-dozen languages. He is a skilled boater and a tenor saxophonist for the Wakefield, Rhode Island, Concert Band. He is married to Susan Baran and has two very cool children, Matt and Jordan, who grew up much faster than he wanted.

No Connect code

A new copy of this textbook does NOT come with a Connect access code. No other review seems to mention this, and the book's description is deceptively unclear. Just a heads up to anyone else who is unfortunate enough to have a professor that is using the online program. The greedy publisher is more than happy to charge you $145 for a new book and then another $65 for the code separately. Do not pay full price for this.

Not really an ebook

This is just a poor PDF version of the print book. It is not formatted for my Kindle. I have to spend a lot of time moving the page around. The publisher should really investigate getting into the REAL ebook market.

This slim volume reads like an extended monologue on On the Media, which is pretty much what I was hoping for when I bought it. Brooke's insightful observations give careful weight to a number of the different perspectives that led us to now without being condescending towards either side, while recognizing that her perspectives all come from her own understanding of reality. I tune in to On the Media every week precisely for Bob & Brooke's unique blend of cynicism, analysis, and, oddly enough, hope. I will absolutely be getting this for friends and relatives.

A Gestalt for Our Zeitgeist

This book provides the insightful reflections of a highly intelligent and genuinely earnest chronicler of the current political and media culture (one of the hosts of NPR's "On the Media" weekly program), on how and why we got to such a paradoxical and divided place in our great American democracy and press. It reads as a conceptual romp through various cultural icons, from Jonathan Swift to Jefferson to Seinfeld, so I found myself having to think in more of an artistic way (rather than the professional STEM mindset, I use most waking hours), but most of the connections the author makes I was able to follow. By accompanying her on her intellectual journey of processing the last election and the current administration, I feel better, in that I at least somewhat comprehend what is going on, and that there are things I can actually do to build and grow in my understanding, accepting, and bridging the chasm on a personal level.

I thought this book was outstanding. Her keen insights into our thought process reminded me of the"myths" described in the book Sapiens written by Yuval Noah Harari. These shared myths are essential to what enabled us to become civilized on such a large scale. Her book was more practical in its analysis and application. Also many hundreds of pages shorter. Thank you.

About the Author

Catherine LaBerta is a Full Professor in the Computer Science/Mathematics Department at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.� She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY-Buffalo.� Catherine teaches courses that range from Intro to Computers to Programming in C++ to Web Development.� Originally a math major, Catherine took additional courses in computers and programming and found a field that clicked for her.� She enjoys the constant changes in the computer and related fields as it forces one to keep up and constantly learn.� Not a total book worm, she loves skiing in Purgatory, CO, one of her favorite spots. She also enjoys boating–especially schooner trips off the coast of Maine– and will always be working on that golf game.

Good book for the introductory computer class

Fourteen chapters, 11th edition, covering everything from input output storage to enterprise computing.
I like the layout of the chapters, the exercises in the end of the chapters. The team projects are
really informative.

The only piece missing is people in the business, such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

Talks over your head!

I consider myself pretty smart and hold a pretty high level of reading comprehension, however this book is over my head and a horrible read.
It is written attempting to talk to people who may have no idea what computers entail, but fails miserably. Terms are used with out being defined (until later chapters, or if you choose to look it up in the back of the book) and are literally thrown out to the reader to read over and over again before actually understanding the term! As well the total lay out of how it's "taught" is utterly horrible, going for big ideas before defining the small ideas to make it easier to understand it all. As knowing what little I do (And barely a little more from this book) I'm sure I could write this to where people like me who do NEED to learn about computers, could understand and more importantly RETAIN the information.

Indispensable

This volume is the first of two that will replace the prior Anchor Bible volume, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, by R.B.Y. Scott, now more than forty years old. Much has been found, read, and discussed since then, making the new volume necessary and welcome.

The greatest strength of the book is Fox's ability to place Proverbs in the extraordinarily rich wisdom tradition of the ancient world, with particular attention to surviving texts from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Dead Sea. No less important is his attention to the differing transmissions of Proverbs through different scriptural traditions. Like the best of the Anchor volumes, the notes delve deeply into the details, constantly paying close attention to the Hebrew, with reference to the Talmud, to elucidate words, syntax, and symbolism.

Fox goes beyond merely recording parallels with other texts and commentaries of prior scholars: he weighs them, disputes them, and advances his own conclusions.

This new volume encourages me to think that the Anchor Bible will continue to grow and improve.
