Sweet Songbird

I've always loved this sweeping, turbulent, angst filled historical saga. It's been many years since my paperback copy went missing and wonderful to see it available on kindle these days.

This is the story of a young woman, Kitty Daniels who rises above poverty and violence to take center stage as a vocalist of renown in the mid 1800's.

I can't stress how much I love this story, Kitty's courage and strength of purpose in the face of adversity and the two men in her life who want Kitty for very different reasons.

Loved the characters, and the backdrop of a darker and seedier London. The book couldn't be considered PC by any means but it is an extremely well written historical romance/saga. If you enjoy this type of story then this is well worth a look at. Time and money well spent.

Without a good professor, this book is just awful

I am using this book as a Georgia Tech Aerospace Engineering Dynamics requirement, and that is the only reason. The content is just awful. Nothing is explained. Each chapter has 4-5 examples of various problems and 2-3 pages of actual content writing, then just a ton of problems to work on. Avoid if you can and if needed, just hope for a great professor.

Not an "introduction" to the subject

This was my textbook for my sophomore course in dynamics back in 1985. Don't let the really cute little cartoon characters in the book fool you -- it was not an easy book to learn from. The author's concept, use and emphasis on reference frames is good, but the notation is confusing and very much unlike most other elementary texts on dynamics. I remember I kept reading the title of the book over & over, particularly, the phrase "An Introduction to Dynamics" -- with the emphasis here being on the word "Introduction." There is nothing introductory about this text and it would be better off titled as a text on Intermediate Dynamics. Ironically, when I got to my junior year a different professor used the same text for the intermediate dynamics course, which seemed more fitting to me. Even so, if you are looking for a text on intermediate dynamics I would recommend looking at some other titles, like Greenwood -- a true classic.

This book was so poorly done!

I was utterly disappointed with this textbook. The explanations were meager, at best, and did not help me understand the book. In my opinion, A very good textbook is one in which the student is virtually able to "teach him/herself" the material in the book without a professor. This book was apparently not written for that. Not only were explanations lacking, but derivations were hard to follow (skipped too many steps),.. Example problems existed but they were no help whatsoever for the extremely difficult problems at the end of each chapter. Worthless investment. I am trying to find a dynamics book that I can actually follow.

A book es un libro...

Cute, goofy, bilingual rhymes that introduce Spanish vocabulary through kooky jokes... I like that each poem is in both Spanish and English, and that the definitions are reinforced through humor -- one of the stronger ways to learn -- and that each language is used to explore the other, back and forth, back and forth... The rhymes can be a little hard to wrap your tongue around, but there's wit and whimsy and it doesn't talk down to the readers... A nice addition to any bilingual library! (ReadThatAgain!)

Spanish with Giggles

Silly rhymes (Jay Harris) and silly pictures (Matt Cordell) make up this adorable book. Harris introduces or reinforces Spanish vocabulary with poems that are "Shel Silverstein" fun. For example,

Than un arbol in my sock.

This "poem" book does a nice job of using the english words to describe the spanish words in a rhyming sort of fashion. I recommend this as a simple fun way of introducing vocabulary to children.

My daughter does not want to play the songs in her lesson book, so I was happy to find some music at her level that she enjoys playing. I wanted to mention that the excerpt given in Amazon's listing is not actually from this book. The actual pieces are a little easier and the hand position is shown on the first page of each piece.

I agree with another review here that says the rhythms are a bit complex for beginners. If your child is playing chords but all the rhythms they know thus far are quarters and straight eighths, they will not be able to play it easily. There are things like eight note rests and dotted quarters in these arrangements. But of course, the limitation of the music is that the melody and rhythm has to be conveyed somehow. I think they did fine with simplifying as much as possible.

There are no chords, only the single melodic line which alternates between the left and right hands in order to achieve the correct melody. I would have preferred to see the melody on the right hand and chords on the left. Then again, the point is for the player to not have to change hand positions. So there you go. In order to convey the music, it requires some slightly more complex rhythms. That said, with a little practice even a beginner can get this.

Maggie M. Larche thinks economics is more fun than jumping on a trampoline while eating cotton candy. A native Floridian, she currently lives in Daphne, Alabama, with her husband and kids. Striker Jones was born from her personal fondness for a good mystery. "Striker Jones" definitely hits a home run!

As a high school Economics teacher, I was curious to read, "Striker Jones." Interestingly, although it is written for a younger audience, I find that my high school students enjoy its variety of scenarios that invoke curiosity and learning! Sometimes, Economics and its terminology can feel quite dry and dull. "Striker Jones" removes the drudgery of study and takes the student to Economics proficiency and intrigue! I highly recommend this book.

`It's elementary, my dear Maggie Larche!'

Finding ways to introduce children to the scary adult topics such as math and economics is not an easy task, but according to author Maggie M. Larche's bio, she `thinks economics is more fun than jumping on a trampoline while eating cotton candy. Combining a masters degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago with years of working with elementary students, she is committed to bringing the joy of economics to the next generation.'

She has created a fun group of characters - Striker Jones, Bill Flannagan, Zach Marcus, Amy, Sheila et al - with Striker playing the major role as chief detective and problem solver. Larche sets her book into chapters each of which is a mystery to be solved and at the end of each chapter the Solution is explained. By creating stories that very subtly introduce the economic subjects of supply and demand, incentives, and trade-offs disguised as detective mysteries she manages to bring knowledge and entertainment together in a manner that likely will serve as solid bases for expanding further in school. An easy, excellent introduction to basic economics

Although few academics would want to acknowledge this, economics is, at bottom, about human behavior: rational humans respond to incentives and shy away from disincentives. If you understand that, you're more than halfway to understanding the marketplace.

Maggie Larche does understand the human connection to economic behavior, and she also understands that it's never too early to start teaching children the logical outcomes of their decision and behavior. To this end, she's written a perfect book for older elementary to younger middle school aged children. In several short, enjoyable chapters, Striker Jones amazes his friends by solving a series of mysteries. Striker has two advantages that his friends do not have: he pays attention and he understands those basic economic principles of incentives and disincentives.

If you would like to give your child an easy, fun introduction to economics, I highly recommend this book.
