A Theology of James

Christopher Morgan, professor of Theology at California Baptist University has written a cogent, succinct, and faithful book on the message and theology of James. This work is unique in that it does not seek to become overly enamoured in exegetical detail that it misses the overarching thematic structure of James, nor does it just survey the broad themes of James without reference to specific texts. The series, Explorations in Biblical Theology, is designed for the purpose of taking the careful insights of exegesis and wedding it to the theological message of a particular book or idea. Morgan states this up front by way of analogy, "If we wanted to survey a large tract of land, we might do so from various points of view. We might walk through it, drive through it, or fly over it in a helicoptor...walking through it would be be like biblical exegesis...Flying over it is like systematic theology, as it orients us to the major contours of the land. Driving through it is comparable to biblical theology, as it cover the bulk of the terrain and yet gives fairly broad perspective" (xvi). Taking the insights of exegetical work while seeing the need for an overall theology of the book, Morgan drives the car right in between these two methods.

In chapter 1 Morgan takes up the traditional contextual approach of identifying the context in which the book of James is found (question of authorship,date, recipients, overall structure). He comes down on the side that the author is James, the brother of Jesus drawing upon evidence that he is the only viable James in the NT, church history support, and the similarity in Greek between the Acts 15 speech and the epistle of James, and lastly because of the Jewish flavor of the work (9). After surveying James' influences in chapter 2, Morgan gets into the pastoral burden of the book. This section is by far my favorite part of the whole book. Morgan identifies the identifying center of the book as "wisdom for consistency in the community" (42). What does this mean for him? Two things emerge as Morgan continues with regard to this center. First, wisdom for consistency is a necessary quality that the recipients of James' letter need for the maturity of their faith. Whether it is suffering, the poor, speech, or worker/boss relations, seeking wisdom for God goes a long way in providing a strengthening faith. Morgan goes onto to speak of how the epistle and its particular issues are directly tied to community and their reponse to pull together in seeking wisdom in concert with a consistent mind. Enduring trials, watching the tongue, not showing favoritism, slandering, even prayer are done well only in a community seeking God's wisdom (43-44). Morgan readdress the issue of consistency in the church later on in the book when considering the James' idea of faith producing good works (137).

Another part of this work that is very helpful in understanding the theology of James is the chapter on A Sketch of James's Theology. Readers will appreciate the very clear presentation of material done in a systematic mannner. Secondly, Morgan is quick to understand in the chapter that theology and ethics are never to be wholly separated in James, for he is man who believes ethics is grounded in what we believe about God, Jesus, the Law, God's Word.

The last chapter is written with an eye towards application of James' theology and teaching. The application that was most helpful for me was his insistence that we not lose sight of James' exhortation that covenant faithfulness makes demands upon our life. We believe in the covenant, yet sometimes we are not good at dealing with the demands of that covenant. "Salvation is all of grace, but that grace is never divorced from our fruit or perseverance" (188).

Overall, this book was an excellent intermediate resource on building a theology of James. The traditional exegetical questions are answered and yet we are not left with a treatise on the Greek text of James, but an overall picture of his theology and the concerns that he addressed. If you want to dig into the epistle of James with a sure guide, this is it.

A superb overview of James' theology and thought.

When P&R sent me a copy of A Theology of James to review, I expected a good book from which I could learn. What I did not expect was such exegetical and theological dynamite; and in such a small (218 pages including bibliography) package.
Christopher Morgan has done a masterful job with this book.
Subtitled "Wisdom for God's People", this book does show that there is an indisputable link between James and Old Testament Wisdom literature. Morgan highlights common themes and shows how James builds upon Old Testament Wisdom literature in an effort to show us how to be wise today. Morgan shows us that James' desire is for the people to be wisely consistent in their attitudes, behavior, suffering, words, and they ways in which they interact with one another.
There is an interesting chapter on James and Paul. I honestly didn't have great expectations for this chapter simply because I felt that Morgan was going to throw out the obligatory discussion of how that James and Paul are not contradicting each other, etc, ad nauseum. I was gratified to find that Morgan not only took the issue much further than that, but that Morgan feels that James did not even have Pauline writings in mind as he wrote. Morgan would have us believe that James is simply telling the folks that faith is only genuine if it demonstrates its authenticity by works. I must say that his argument is compelling, and that I am inclined to agree. In fact, there is a good reason to continue further by connecting faith and wisdom here, because wisdom also shows up in our lives, and we only get wisdom by faith (James 1:5-8).
The deepest section of the book is the section on James' theology. Honestly, I knew that James had a theology, but never dreamed of how much could actually be seen. James has a high view of God, and a well-developed Christology. Though there is no obvious doctrine of the Holy Spirit, James' theology is never the less deep. In fact, Morgan asserts that James' practical teachings are rooted in his theology, just as the practical teachings of the Old Testament are rooted in the nature of God.
Though brief, Morgan also gives us a chapter on how the theology of James is relevant today. All I can say is that it is indeed relevant, because I don't want to give away all that he says.
In the end, I must give this a five star rating only because five is the limit.

She has written and edited numerous articles and books on the media and public opinion, including Media Power in Politics, Fifth Edition (2006), The Power of Communication: Managing Information in Public Organizations (2003), and Processing Politics: Learning from Television in the Internet Age (2001), which won the 2003 Goldsmith Book Prize. This award is given by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

One of the best books on classical Hatha yoga

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read on classical yoga practices. This book provides a commentary on one of the principal source texts of Hatha yoga, I won't bother to explain the importance of this ancient text here, a quick Google search will make clear how important the Gheranda Samhita is. This commentary, by the well regarded Swami Niranjan, head of the famed Bihar School of Yoga (publisher of many other highly recommeded books on yoga), provides a verse-by-verse discussion, complete with the original Sanskrit, a transliteration, and an English translation. After each English translation is a DETAILED explanation of technique discussed in the text, including helpful background and yoga philosophy as appropriate. When I say detailed commentary, I mean literally step-by-step instructions with a list of the benefits and contraindications for each practice. Where modern versions of the ancient practice differ, he explains both the ancient way and modern way.

Anyone who wants to understand the origins of classical Hatha yoga would be richly rewarded by this work.

Fantastic translation

Having read at least 10 other translations of the Yoga Sutras, I found this one to be the most comprehensive one for someone who isn't a Sanskrit scholar. I highly recommend his book.

About the Author
Professor Whitbourne received her Ph. D. from Columbia University and has dual specializations in life-span developmental psychology and clinical psychology. She has taught at the State University of New York at Geneseo and the University of Rochester. At the University of Massachusetts, she received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2002, she received the Florence Denmark/Psi Chi National Faculty Advisor Award and in 2003, the APA Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) Master Mentor Award . She is the Honors Coordinator in the Psychology Department and the Director of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement in the newly established Commonwealth Honors College. The author of fourteen books and over one hundred journal articles and book chapters, Professor Whitbourne is regarded as an expert in the field of personality development in adulthood and old age. She is currently the APA Council Representative of Division 20 of APA having also served as Division 20 President. Professor Whitbourne has developed nationally recognized approaches to technological innovations in teaching, and the web site she developed for her introductory psychology course was selected as a McGraw-Hill Web Cafe "Site of the Month."
