About the Author

Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1925. When she died at the age of thirty-nine, America lost one of its most gifted writers at the height of her powers. O'Connor wrote two novels, Wise Blood (1952) and The Violent Bear It Away (1960), and two story collections, A Good Man Is Hard to Find (1955) and Everything That Rises Must Converge (1964). Her Complete Stories, published posthumously in 1972, won the National Book Award that year, and in a 2009 online poll it was voted as the best book to have won the award in the contest's 60-year history. Her essays were published in Mystery and Manners (1969). In 1988 the Library of America published her Collected Works; she was the first postwar writer to be so honored. O'Connor was educated at the Georgia State College for Women, studied writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and wrote much of Wise Blood at the Yaddo artists' colony in upstate New York. She lived most of her adult life on her family's ancestral farm, Andalusia, outside Milledgeville, Georgia.

Her Own Words--The Best Words

THE HABIT OF BEING is required reading for any Flannery O'Connor fan. Nobody can explain Flannery like Flannery. Through her letters the reader has an immediate connection to the writer and the woman, and that connection made me regret even more that I did not know her personally. Sally Fitzgerald includes letters that show Flannery's human side, her cranky side, her funny side, even her arrogant side. I read the letters before the identity of A was revealed, and I was intrigued. I went back and read them again after that identify was made public, and I'm even more intrigued. To understand fully what Flannery was attempting in her stories, one needs to read the letters. To understand fully what she was attempting in her life, one needs to read the letters. No satisfactory biography has been written about Flannery O'Connor, but I'm not sure that one is necessary when we have at least a start at an autobiography with THE HABIT OF BEING.

Flannery wrote under a death sentence, and it seems inescapable that she expected - or at least hoped and imagined - that these letters would be published. Thus, they are written to you, dear reader, as much as to anyone. And they are superb. This is Flannery at her best. If you, like so many, are enthralled by her works, you will find this book essential. If you suspect that some of the self-appointed and so-called experts on her work could benefit from a strong laxative and are curious to find out what she herself really had in mind in her various stories, you will find this book immensely rewarding. And if you imagine that you might enjoy the musings of a soul whose wisdom, character, and intellect were each exceptional, you will find this book compelling.

Humor, Faith, and Work

Flannery O'Connor's correspondence is a fine testimony to humor, faith, and work in the life of a fascinating and absolutely unswerving human being. As she says in a letter to Andrew Lytle from this collection, the fact that she was a Catholic kept her from being a regional writer and the fact that she was a Southerner kept her from being a Catholic writer. If you want the best tutorial you're apt to ever read on how to write fiction, forget the usual "Write a Novel in 30 Days" garbage and get a copy of THE HABIT OF BEING. She'll also teach you quite a bit about living.

The "Aha!" Factor

Reading "More Than Cool Reason" will be a breath of fresh air to anyone who has not yet encountered the "Lakoff-Johnson-Turner" bibliography on metaphor human thought. I found this more helpful than "Metaphors We Live By" (Lakoff & Johnson), since it deals with specific texts (e.g., "Because I could not stop for Death", "Sonnet 73" (Shakespeare), "By the Light of the Jasmine Moon"), which anchors their discussion, which might otherwise veer into the rather abstract.
Reading this book changed my thinking about metaphor, and has drastically affected--for the better--my teaching on metaphor in my courses on poetry. Students have also found it extremely helpful. There is some rather tiresome repetition, but much of the authors' reiteration of points is necessary to understanding what they are saying. The indices are very helpful, although I found it necessary to extend their topical index with my own "speed index".

five for the idea, three for its handling

The important claim this book makes is that literary language does not differ from common everyday language. Poets make use of the same linguistic resources and cognitive mechanisms we all use in everyday situations. They just do it better, in innovative ways. The discussion of poems the authors provide to support their argument should perhaps be more articulate and systematic in order to be truly persuasive. At times one gets the impression that this book was conceived as a kind of divertissement in wait of future, more carefully planned incursions on the subject.
However, this does not diminish the importance of a book which urges literary critics and all those who like books to consider the cognitive basis of both everyday and literary communication. Also, More than Cool Reason can be read as an accessible introduction to Lakoff and Turner (and Johnson)'s theory of conceptual metaphor. For a much more articulate discussion, I would recommend Lakoff and Johnson's "Philosophy in the Flesh", but then you will have to draw the implications of their theories for literature by yourself.

This is a quick and very elementary read on the character who was the soul of the Spanish Inquisition. It is at most a high school overview of a moment of true evil in the history of Europe, a precursor to the evils of slavery and the Holocaust. It is always truly evil to view another human being or group of human beings as not worthy of humanity and kindness.

More Propaganda Than History

I have one compliment for "Tomas de Torquemada". Specifically: Given that the book is intended for young readers, and at the low price of $5.95, "Tomas de Torquemada" is handsomely put together. I was particularly impressed by the number and quality of artistic reproductions. I should add, in fairness, that the writing and the overall approach are anything but dumbed-down or condescending.

That being said.... I had good reason to suspect that Enid A. Golberg and Norman Itzkowitz's assessment of the much-maligned Torquemada would be part and parcel of the Black Legend. My reading confirmed that which I had anticipated.

On a micro level, I noted the number of risible and offensive statements. I'll provide a couple of examples, if I may. On page 14, the authors write: "A follower [of Christ] named Judas took a bribe from Jesus' Roman enemies." A ridiculous and futile attempt to whitewash the Jews; it was they, not the Romans, who paid Judas the 30 pieces of silver to commit the ultimate betrayal. And on page 25: "A friar named [Saint] Vincent Ferrer spread similar lies [regarding Jewish responsibility for Christ's cruel death]...." First, Jewish involvement in the crucifixion of the Lord is not a lie. Second, the way Goldberg and Itzkowitz refer to Saint Vincent is singularly disrespectful. Saint Vincent, the Angel of the Apocalypse, was a worker of true miracles. In addition, he converted thousands of Jews and Muslims. He's worthy of more -- infinitely more -- than the authors' childish and bitter disdain.

On a macro level, the authors' understanding of the Spanish Inquisition and Torquemada appears to be based more on Mel Brooks' "History of the World: Part I" than on William Thomas Walsh's "Characters of the Inquisition". It's clearly beyond Goldberg and Itzkowitz's analytical capabilities (and prejudices) that, given the historical context, the Inquisition and the Dominican friar played an inevitable and essential role in protecting -- indeed, preserving -- the Catholic (yes, you read that word correctly) Spain of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. In addition, the supposed horrors of the Inquisition are just that -- supposed; thoroughly antithetical to historical fact. And the portrayal of Torquemada as fiend and monster (who's crudely described in the book's sensationalist subtitle as the "Architect of Torture During the Spanish Inquisition") is a calumny -- a hackneyed, unwarranted, and outrageous charge.

This book seeks not to enlighten, but to brainwash. It's intended to ensure that Jewish boys and girls be self-righteous in their rejection of Christ and His Church, while their Catholic counterparts should be guilt-ridden regarding their Faith and history. What Jewish parents do is entirely their business. As a Catholic, however, I believe I'm within my rights to urge Catholic parents to keep this Christophobic and anti-Catholic book out of the hands of their children.

King John and the Writing of the Magna Charta

My 13 year old and I have read "The Magna Charta" together and both learned an enormous amount of information concerning not only the Magna Charta but the history surrounding this document and the rulers who opposed or were forced into the signing of this Charta.

This book is written for the Middle School level and my son needed some help with pronunciation, definitions and discussion as we read. Many new concepts were introduced including how Kings ruled their lands during the Medieval time period, relationships between the Pope and King, the transfer of lands and dictatorship, relationships and fighting between rulers of different lands, the development of laws to protect the Kings people, and the progression and refinement of Charters which lead to the Magna Charta.

Although the focus of this book is primarily on King John's life and his influence on the Magna Charta, this book is highly recommended for middle schoolers who would also like to learn about past rulers including King Henry, King Richard, King John, Stephen Langton, and other interesting subjects such as the Crusades, The Sheriff of Nottingham, Castles, Runnymede, the Siege of Rochester, the Pope, Hubert de Burgh, the Treaty of Lambeth, and very early American History related to the Magna Charta.

good historical work , but author's own analysis is horrible

Its quite good if you want to know the sequence of events which lead the signing, and a quick insight into life of the period in general. But the final chapter is the author's own personal opinion, and he undercuts this otherwise wonderful work by supporting things which are total opposite of what this document symbolizes. He seems to be an FDR new dealer, and he tries to draw a straight line - formt he Magna Charta to the English Bill of Rights to the American Constitution and STRAIGHT INTO the creation of the UN and FDR's promise of 'freedom from want, freedom from fear' (i.e, socialism. who else can provide you 'freedom from want', whatever that means?) - the exact opposite of the political freedom and check on arbitrary power that this document came to represent.

The Magna Charta is an excellent resource for middle school students or anyone interested in a very readable historical narrative of The Great Charter. The first 130 pages cover events leading up to the signing of the charter while the remainder of the book decribe more recent charters of freedom that can trace their roots back to the Magna Charta.

Don't be put off by the negative review of the author's positive analysis of the U.N. Charter. This is in reference to the very last page of the book and in no way tarnishes the other 168 pages of great reading.
