About the Author
Gary Regan, bartender extraordinaire, was born over a pub in Lancashire, England. An expert on spirits and cocktails, he has written numerous articles on bar service and liquor. He has also worked as a consultant to restaurants and liquor companies, written about drinks and drinking, and coordinated with his wife Mardee Haidin Regan on a variety of food and beverage-oriented projects.

Beware of the cheap copy.

The paperback currently sold as new apparently was not printed from the original typeset version. It appears to have been scanned, then printed on a highly porous cheap paper with high dot gain. As a result, the type appears uneven and almost blurry. The letters in the headings run together and sometimes plug up (e.g. the capital B appears as a solid blob). This is a scandalously bad job of printing a book, the worst I have ever seen.

If you know the publishing history, you may be able to track down the first printing as a used book. Printed in hardcover in 1991, paperback in 1993. "First revised HarperPaperbacks Printing: November 1999. Cover Photograph (C) 2000 FPG." So look for the 1991 or 1993 printing.

I don't like being forced to assign a star value this review. I have nothing against the content, and will make use of the book, but is it not a satisfying book to own.

If you're getting only one book of this sort, consider Mr. Boston, Platinum Edition, which has more recipes, the same background information, and beautiful color photos.

Great Book for Everything I Look For

Still much better (in my opinion) than other similar books by other authors. This one has a great variety, including obscure and historical drinks, and organized in an easy-to-find tale of contents and glossary. What is it with new publishers ... you see less glossaries and table of contents in books these days. Glad this book took the time and consideration to make a quality catalog.

Darren Shan never disappoints

Larten Crepsley's life could never be considered an "easy" one. He was born into the most difficult of circumstances and left his hometown as a known killer. He has been in and out of one awful adventure after another --- mostly not of his choosing. But the life of a vampire, living in a human and demonic world, would not be likely to run that smoothly. Sometimes, however, wonderful things can happen. Larten Crepsley has found love.

Love makes many changes in Larten's life. He is no longer known as Larten Crepsley, but as Vur Horston. He is living in Paris, in the early 1900s, the Paris of Bram Stoker and his famous novel DRACULA. The beautiful Alicia Dunyck isn't aware of his previous life because the past he reveals to her is fabricated. How can he tell her he's a vampire? The relationship with Alicia is cemented once she meets the little orphan Gavner Purl, who, according to Larten, is his ward. Though Larten has watched after the child, he is also responsible for the deaths of the boy's parents and everyone on that ship in Greenland (that is yet another story). So he has carefully avoided any emotional ties to the child.

Alicia bubbles over with motherly love, and a stronger bond is formed among the three. This is all very nice except for the fact that Larten has lied about his past and feels tremendous remorse over murdering Gavner's parents and all the ship's occupants. Things still manage to go very well, and in an emotional moment, he actually asks Alicia to be his bride. For the reader, it's plain to see that something very wrong is going to happen, and it does.

One night, at an art exhibition, Larten encounters another vampire. Though at first frightened that he will now be discovered, he realizes, with a sense of relief, that the vampire is none other than an old friend from his childhood known as Tanish Eul. The renewed friendship springs to life, and Tanish introduces Larten to his own circle of rather shady friends. His warmth toward Gavner also allows him into Larten's life in a more intimate way. Gavner grows to love and trust the old vampire and affectionately calls him Uncle Tanish.

Before long, Tanish offers Larten some wonderful opportunities with promises that all will be well. If not for Tanish's greed and deceptive ways, it might have been a happy partnership. Before he knows it, Larten is pulled into a conflict with the vampaneze (a clan who hate vampires) and accused not only of murdering a young woman, but also of being a vampire himself by the very person he thought was a best friend. With only moments to spare, he escapes the city, once again having to live as a hunted/haunted outcast. He also leaves behind his life with a heartbroken Alicia, who now knows his true identity but not his real story.

Where can he go? Where can he find sanctuary? Larten is again tormented and searching for his own peace. Perhaps it's time for a return to Vampire Mountain. Would they accept him back into their folds? Times do change. What are his chances?

Darren Shan knows what his readers want, and he never disappoints them. The third book in this prequel series to Cirque du Freak brings blood, battles and gore aplenty. The redheaded vampire is a character with depth, feeling and keen intelligence. Fans will be both horrified by and delighted with the twists Shan gives Larten's tragic story. It's true; a good vampire (is that an oxymoron?) never dies, though he might cherish that possibility.

What will happen when, years later, Larten meets Gavner as a young, angry man? Readers, get ready for the next installment!

Picking up exactly where Ocean of Blood left off, Palace of the Damned is the penultimate book in this prequel (to Circus of the Damned) quartet. After killing the ship's entire crew - as revenge for their killing Malora after his 'vampiracy' was revealed to the crew, is on the run. With a baby in his care - keeping it safe from the cannibal on the ship - Larten now has more to worry about than his own needs.

Tired of the vampiric life, Larten no longer has the thirst for he hunt and hides out in Paris as a human. It is there where he finds love - and maybe even some happiness.

But how long can Larten really hide out as a human before his inner darkness and he's forced to return to the dark, to his clan. And will he be safe anywhere or will his enemies find him?

One thing's for sure, one way or another, Larten's path is sure to be perilous and lead to deaths.

Palace of the Damned is great, it brings out more of Larten's humanity while also contrasting that with just how not human he is. After the first book introduced us to Larten's true human life and his beginnings as a assistant and the second brought in more of the vampire politics, it's great to see a different side to Larten.

As someone who's reading this prequel series before reading Circque du Freak, I know that I am missing some of what readers of that series will get out of this series. The characters that are in this series, I'm sure will pop up in the latter series (at least some of them) and whether you read that first or this first, it'll be great to know their back stories as well.

It didn't feel like there was as much action in this installment as in the others, but it definitely brought a necessary bit of Larten's life to light.

This series definitely stops in the middle of scenes and on cliffhangers and Palace of the Damned's ending is no different - it will have you almost counting the days until May when the final Saga of Larten Crepsley book releases.

exactly what i expected from darren shan .his style is thrilling with out going overboard.will continue to buy the rest of the series,plus any other series he comes out with.hard to find a good thriller that dosen't get all soap opery on you

Comprehensive, but long

Pros: Very comprehensive in subject matter, good grouping of information, gives definition of key words at side of each page, contains summaries at the end of each chapter

Cons: Not visually appealing (only black and blue ink used, even in pictures), The sections are long and drawn out, no chapter review questions are given to test proficiency.

Overall, I thought I must have recieved an old textbook due to the lack of visual stimulation which helps me absorb the information. But I do have the most recent copy. I wonder why they would cut corners in this regard even though the book sells for as much as other books that make reading easier by providing a more pleasant visual experience.

But it is a college level book, so I can't complain too much. The quality of information is good.
