One of the best BJJ Books

This book is incredible. I purchased it prior to a deployment I went on where I couldn't practice any Jiu-Jitsu. It covers everything from basics to advanced techniques with simple descriptions and multiple photographs at different angles. I highly recommend this book as a companion to a BJJ class or something to study when you are in an environment where you can't practice regularly.

Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared.

"Repaso" is a complete review of the grammar of the Spanish language, written in a clear and engaging style. It is organized in such a way that accessing information about discreet grammar points is very easy. I head an organization (Platiquemos - Let's Talk) that teaches Spanish to adults; we have found "Repaso" to be so valuable that we are cross-referencing our own texts so that students who want or need more grammar information (we stress communication) can easily find it.
The best news about "Repaso", though, is its almost unbelievably low price. It offers more valuable information than texts with prices six, seven, or more, times higher. It is, in short, an incredible value.

Repaso, Complete Review Workbook For Grammar

The best I have seen to date! This thick Spanish grammar book is more advanced than most reviews (intermediate to advanced) and presents materials in a little different way, making the grammar principals easier to understand and remember. Specific areas of grammar that were "fuzzy" to me before are now much more clear! The text and exercises are definitely not boring. Don't forget to purchase the Repaso Answer Key book so you can check your answers and correct any errors.

This fifth edition also includes two newly-translated poems: a never-before-published translation of the prefatory poem describing the boat trip on the Thames, and an entirely reworked version of the tail-rhyme in Chapter III, now more closely conforming to the metre of the original.

Distinctly superior

Let me first say, I am not fluent in Esperanto, so my first thoughts were that the translation was unintelligible. I was wrong.

There are multiple Esperanto translations of Alice. This is by far the most accurate of those I have sampled.

Additionally, attempting to read this, taught me a lot.

I give this five stars for the following reasons:

1. The translation seems truest to Lewis Carroll's intent.

2. The graphics and presentation are very well done, making it pleasant to read.

3. You learn a lot of expressions that are not easy to construct in vanilla Esperanto, while maintaining the integrity of Carroll's intention.

4. Je ne sais quoi. There is something lovable about this edition.

I would have attempted to review this in Esperanto, but as Mark Twain said of the French: "I never could succeed in making those idiots understand their own language." (Not to imply that Esperanto is anyone's language, per se. I only suggest that Esperantan's don't understand when I try to communicate with them in Esperanto).

It is O.K.

I found this book to be three books, with the first the most interesting. As you read further into the book, it becomes more redundant and boring. The author's favourite words are "Sweet" and "exquisite" which is used nearly on every other page.

Although it is presented as non-fiction, I find most of what the author writes to be too improbable for any one person. However, there is a factual thread that does comes through and that the author has a deep wound she is trying to heal. The book simply stops rather than ends. I like a good conclusion not a chapter of self-help exercises and a final few paragraphs on how we should go out there and "carry the pipe".

I did find certain aspects useful. One is that she lists and constructs various rituals or ceremonies for people do in their spiritual lives as Pagans or New Agers. She also has self-help exercises which do help in understanding yourself. I know people rave about her insights etc, but what I found was a distillation of many New Age beliefs, which is fine if that what is you want.

To be quite honest about this book, I did not finish reading it, even though it was well written. It's a case of mistaken identity: about halfway through it was evident that Brooke Medicine Eagle is preaching New Age religion and is not holding to traditional practices and beliefs, as I hoped when I bought this book. At the point where she was explaining how she believes that Christianity and Traditional beliefs are consitent with each other, I quit reading and merely skimmed, finding that this book is a conglomeration of different beliefs, including 12-step programs. Perhaps this is what a reader may be looking for; this reader was not. Those looking for Traditional reading might wish to read Sacred Fireplace, by Pete S. Catches, Sr., or Crow Dog, by Leonard Crow Dog and Richard Erdoes, both of which are filled with traditional spiritual insight and practice.

Several years ago, on a flight from New York to California, I had the good fortune to sit next to a psychologist named Dan Gilbert. He had a shiny bald head, an irrepressible good humor, and we talked (or, more accurately, he talked) from at least the Hudson to the Rockies--and I was completely charmed. He had the wonderful quality many academics have--which is that he was interested in the kinds of questions that all of us care about but never have the time or opportunity to explore. He had also had a quality that is rare among academics. He had the ability to translate his work for people who were outside his world.

Now Gilbert has written a book about his psychological research. It is called Stumbling on Happiness, and reading it reminded me of that plane ride long ago. It is a delight to read. Gilbert is charming and funny and has a rare gift for making very complicated ideas come alive.

Stumbling on Happiness is a book about a very simple but powerful idea. What distinguishes us as human beings from other animals is our ability to predict the future--or rather, our interest in predicting the future. We spend a great deal of our waking life imagining what it would be like to be this way or that way, or to do this or that, or taste or buy or experience some state or feeling or thing. We do that for good reasons: it is what allows us to shape our life. And it is by trying to exert some control over our futures that we attempt to be happy. But by any objective measure, we are really bad at that predictive function. We're terrible at knowing how we will feel a day or a month or year from now, and even worse at knowing what will and will not bring us that cherished happiness. Gilbert sets out to figure what that's so: why we are so terrible at something that would seem to be so extraordinarily important?

In making his case, Gilbert walks us through a series of fascinating--and in some ways troubling--facts about the way our minds work. In particular, Gilbert is interested in delineating the shortcomings of imagination. We're far too accepting of the conclusions of our imaginations. Our imaginations aren't particularly imaginative. Our imaginations are really bad at telling us how we will think when the future finally comes. And our personal experiences aren't nearly as good at correcting these errors as we might think.

I suppose that I really should go on at this point, and talk in more detail about what Gilbert means by that--and how his argument unfolds. But I feel like that might ruin the experience of reading Stumbling on Happiness. This is a psychological detective story about one of the great mysteries of our lives. If you have even the slightest curiosity about the human condition, you ought to read it. Trust me. --Malcolm Gladwell

Not offering a self-help book, but instead mounting a scientific explanation of the limitations of the human imagination and how it steers us wrong in our search for happiness, Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard, draws on psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy and behavioral economics to argue that, just as we err in remembering the past, so we err in imagining the future. "Our desire to control is so powerful, and the feeling of being in control so rewarding, that people often act as though they can control the uncontrollable," Gilbert writes, as he reveals how ill-equipped we are to properly preview the future, let alone control it. Unfortunately, he claims, neither personal experience nor cultural wisdom compensates for imagination's shortcomings. In concluding chapters, he discusses the transmission of inaccurate beliefs from one person's mind to another, providing salient examples of universal assumptions about human happiness such as the joys of money and of having children. He concludes with the provocative recommendation that, rather than imagination, we should rely on others as surrogates for our future experience. Original Take on The Topic of Happiness

This book was a worthwhile read as it presented original ideas I had not previously encountered on how to predict what may or may not make us happy in the future based on what makes us and others happy in the present. I was expecting self-help, pop-science and recycling of commonly talked about studies, so this new and refreshing take on the topic of happiness was a pleasant surprise. I think back to this book now when trying to factor future happiness into my decision making process and goals. One of my favorite reads of the year, and a simple one at that.

Stumbling on wisdom...

No one book will ever solve all your problems and show you The Way. As Seneca said, "As long as you live, keep learning to live." But even that learning bit is not easy with all the noise of experience. That's where Daniel Gilbert's little nugget helps. It helps you eliminate a lot of noise with some powerful insights drawn from psychological studies. The three most useful for me are these: (1) It's not the future as such, but it's the planning for the future that makes you anxious. (2) All your planning for, say, five years later is based on the implicit assumption that you will be the same as you are now and think the same as you do now, five years later. (3) Quite likely, your particular circumstances are not entirely new to humanity and someone has been on the path (or parts of the path) you will end up taking so you can learn from them. So be ready to stumble and you may stumble on happiness. (This review is for the print version of the book. I also ordered a Kindle version to keep on my smartphone but I haven't flicked through it yet, so I wouldn't know if there is anything not quite right about the Kindle presentation.)

Simple message told over and over and over

Stumbling on Happiness tells a simple, useful set of truths about how we make decisions. But it does so in about 3-5 times as many words than is necessary. I felt like I was reading a teenager's book report that was written with an emphasis on getting to a certain length instead of just summarizing the facts of the matter. I started this book with an eager desire to learn more. I finished it feeling relieved that I was done. It simply takes way too long to tell its story.
