Gentle kindergarten math, workbooks can stand alone

I'm using the Math in Focus Kindergarten workbooks for my child's kindergarten math program. The complete program is VERY expensive (ridiculously so, when you look at other options, like Singapore Essentials or Horizons). However, we have not needed the Teacher's Guide or other components (and were able to find the 4 workbooks for about $35 total through Amazon 3rd party sellers). This makes it comparable to other workbook-based programs. We have done most of Singapore Essentials A and just weren't enamored -- they were all black & white and felt fairly repetitive.

The MIF K books begin very gentle with counting, number recognition, shapes. In fact, I think the first two books in the program (there are 4 total) could probably be used as a K4 math (though I don't think it would last a full school year). The four workbooks are very thin, most about 80 pages. The pages are full-color and attractive -- there are many 2-page spreads meant to be looked at and discussed by teacher & student (almost like a storybook). The drawings are really great, cartoon-like. My daughter loves it. I do think this program is not as "rigorous" as other homeschool K programs (Horizons). By the end of the 4th workbook, the child is adding and subtracting up to 5.

I have looked at a LOT of K and 1st grade programs. My opinion is that this Kindergarten math would be suitable if you plan on following it with: Math in Focus, Singapore, BJU, CLE, Rod & Staff or Math Mammoth. These programs begin gently in Grade 1 with a scope & sequence appropriate for following MIF K.

Other than a couple of pages/activities, this was perfect for my daughter and I didn't have to buy the more expensive instruction book to go with it. She blew through it in about a week, though...

In 1960, Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker Sr. first book, entitled, Kenpo Karate, Law of the Fist and the Empty Hand was completed and published. He Believed that Kenpo could "do much to deter juvenile delinquency" steering young people away from stealing, street fighting and other vices. Through studying Kenpo young people could gain self-confidence, and self-respect, as well as developing humility and self-restraint. Kenpo was presented as a self-defense system to combat unethical fighting methods prevalent on the streets. Through a series of anatomical illustrations drawn by Mr. Parker himself, natural body weapons and targets that could be struck with a devastating effect were identified. Mr. Parker's reasoning for including an anatomical study was simply, "That knowledge of our own points of weakness, as well as those of our opponent, can determine our own victory or defeat." It was clear that with a thorough knowledge of the location of the major nerve centers and critical areas, Kenpoists would be able to defend their own vital areas as well as deliver blows to vital points on an opponent. Vital areas, pressure points sensitive to various methods of attack, along with individual natural weapons were all clearly presented and illustrated on simple to read charts. It is interesting to note, that many of the self-defense techniques presented in this pioneering publication, show embryonic movement patterns that would establish the foundation for subsequent techniques that would be prefixed, suffixed, altered, adjusted, expanded and refined by Sr. Grandmaster Ed Parker Sr. over time.

I've worn out three copies of this classic!

Animal Drawing, Anatomy and Action for Artists is not a modern art instruction book with step by step demonstrations. Instead, it's a collection of splendid original drawings by master nature painter Charles R. Knight with tight, well-written short essays on drawing the creatures and using their skeletal and muscular anatomy to give them lifelike, accurate proportions.

If I need to draw any animal, bird or reptile, I consult this book first. It's concentrated, very concise, lots of information packed into every drawing and every short essay. Birds, reptiles and amphibians are touched on. Representative examples of every general type of animal are included, although every time I go through it I find myself wishing he'd done about three or four volumes and gone into more different species.

Charles R. Knight is the muralist responsible for many of the gorgeous dinosaur and prehistoric life paintings in natural history museums across the country. I first found his paintings at Chicago's Field Museum, but there are more in the Smithsonian and in Toronto and many other museums. His work is brilliant and gorgeous. Some of it has been rendered obsolete by modern dinosaur discoveries, but his mammals extinct and otherwise are still accurate and lifelike.

I have been studying this book since my twenties and still not run out of times I need to go back and reference it for cat joints, birds' wings or cow proportions. A must-have for anyone who likes drawing and painting animals, a fun read for anyone who enjoys natural history. When my copy gets battered and starts losing pages, I replace it and pass the ratty one on to a student. I've done this three times and my fourth copy is starting to show wear.

Wish I saved my money for a better more current book. And I bought for $5.85!

Waste of money, I don't think this book will be helpful to me at all. It was written in 1940 and has a lot of text and very little pictures in comparison. The artists pictures are nice but are his interpretation of animals artistically. The author is obviously talented but I was hoping more for a book with more animals and expressions so that when painting or sculpting I could find the right posture or expression. This is not the book for that for me. Big disappointment, wish I would have seen the print date and looked better into the details of this book rather than just reading reviews.
