This is the kernel of the legend; and it leads to the supremely heroic attempt of Beren and Luthien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, called Morgoth, the Black Enemy, of a Silmaril. In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Luthien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost.

The book is heavily academic so for those looking for episode recaps or easily accessible discussion this is not the book for yo

This book is comprised of a series of round table discussions and essays written by academics, discussing how masculinity is portrayed in the television series "Breaking Bad". There are ten chapters and a large annotated bibliography as well as an episode list.

The book is heavily academic so for those looking for episode recaps or easily accessible discussion this is not the book for you. It is definitely tilted toward university and college academics and those interested in academic discussions of popular culture. To that end, the book is high quality and is a very viable piece of source material for those who want to use it as such.

Some of the essays are better than others. Those that I liked, while maintaining an academic tone, also were more reader friendly and made the reader feel a part of the conversation. A couple of the essays were almost arrogant in tone, talking down to the reader. Those also happened to be the ones that were far less well written.The round table discussions were interesting and well put together making them easy to follow.

The one thing I think I found most disappointing about the book was that every essay and discussion focused on the same limited number of episodes. In five seasons of "Breaking Bad" there was plenty of material and characters that could have been discussed in relation to masculinity in this series. Most of the writing focused solely on Walter and Skyler White.

The book could have been much stronger if more of the episodes had been discussed in relation to the subject matter. I also think there could have been some positive critical perspectives about masculinity from both sexes. It felt like the masculinity being explored was less critical analysis and more just critical.

All of that being said, I would still recommend the book. Once I started reading, I was hooked and my interest never wavered. I found it hard to put down and I was always looking for a bit of time to read a few more pages or another chapter. If you like "Breaking Bad" this is a fun book with heavy ideas on which to chew.

Good read for "Bad" fans!

For a "Bad Fan" this book, a collection of essays that explore the characters and world of "Breaking Bad" is very interesting. It's interesting to have the characters dissected and analyzed. For those of us who watched the show as it unfolded in it's original run, it's a compelling read. Many of the writers came to the show later after being persuaded by family, friends and students that it was worth watching. Watch the series again and read this companion book, it will make the experience more memorable.

I loved the comparison between this program and all of the Westerns that I grew up to love. The one addition that I would make to Walt's frustration with his life is that he is also a really lousy high school Chemistry teacher. This is coming from a high school Chemistry teacher.

Boring for the Layman, May Be Useful to Those With Prior Knowledge of Day Trading

The book touches on several different aspects of day trading, including how to make decisions based on the current market, how to protect yourself and your stocks, and discusses how the stock market is a great way to increase wealth—if, of course, you know what you're doing.

This book, for me, was rather boring. While I don't know a great deal about the stock market, I do know a little bit, but I still found that some of the examples in the book fell short in explaining, especially for those with limited or no knowledge. For that reason, I'm not sure this is a good starter book for those looking to break into the stock market or learn the ins and outs.

For those who already know a good deal about day trading and the stock market, this book might prove useful. If you're new to this and looking to break in to the world of day trading, then you may want to read something a little more basic, depending on your current knowledge.

A great book to start with if you are interested in the field

This is a great guide for a person who has minimal knowledge of what the “market” is and day trading. The topic itself is interesting to some and maybe not as much to others so take some of the other reviews with a grain of salt. This book does read like a textbook offering an insight to what the “market” is but the chapters are short, and to the point. It doesn't drone on and on about ambiguous terms. If you are ever feeling lost or don't understand a term there is a glossary at the end of the book with definitions. Mostly, the book covers the key terms, structure, and psychology of trading. Most specific subjects are just touched upon and would need further research for more information (such as writing a business plan, charting/patterns, etc.). At the end of each chapter there is a “quick recap” to cover the key points. If you are interested in this field this is a great book to start with. *I received a sample of this item in return for an honest and unbiased review*

Full disclosure - I knew nothing about the market prior to reading this book. Unfortunately, this book did not spur any further interest in the subject. I found this book very dry and textbook-like with its layout and chapter structure. It does provide a complete glossary for new or unfamiliar terms and this did help.

I wish this book had been a little easier to read as the information provided was thorough; it really was just hard to get through. This may be more palatable to someone who has a slight background in the information, however small. I think that a bit of pre-information or prior knowledge in the subject would have helped me immensely in reading this.

About the Author
This husband and wife team, with doctorates in Communication from Pennsylvania State University, has spent 36 years conducting research on approaches for mastering communication, and training people around the globe to put into practice the principles derived from their research. Most of their studies were conducted in their role as professors at the University of Oregon. Their work on transforming organizational culture has received the International Association of Business Communication Research Foundation award for bridging communication theory and practice. The Glasers’ work has taken them around the world. Among their clients are Fortune 500 companies such as Hewlett Packard, Weyerhaeuser, Microsoft, Tektronix, and Hyundai, as well federal, state, and local government, from Alaska to New Zealand, including on-going work with the United States Senate. Feature stories have been written about the work of the Glasers in numerous publications, including Business Week, Nation’s Business, Working Woman, National Business Review, Oregon Business, Success Magazine, and the Washington Post.

Excellent book on communication for the workplace.

As a psychologist, I appreciate books that carefully translate research findings into practical advice. This book does this. Rather than claiming a "brand new never before seen magic solution" (be careful of those), the authors present an excellent systematic summary of what has been learned from decades of research on effective communication research. Although they present some of the research to help the reader understand, I recognized far more research findings that influence their advice than they bother to mention. They give some simple yet effective strategies for common communication problems such as "raising delicate issues", and "responding to criticism". Careful explanations are given for how to prepare for and respond to such situations. The authors avoid the common approach of authors of giving one "right" response to problems, and instead guide the reader to understand the purpose of each step they recommend, allowing the reader far more flexibility in implementing the ideas taught. This allows the reader to create their own style without having an overly rehearsed feel to it.

I've read many books on communication, and this is the best one I've found so far. The authors take care to clarify how various problems can arise, and offer useful advice for dealing with them. This book is far more complete than many "pop press" books on the topic, which are more about sounding fancy and fun to read than actually being useful. Nevertheless, this book is surprisingly easy to read. There is appropriate repetition, elaboration and suggestions for practice to actually help the interested reader learn the skills taught and understand why they are helpful.

Great book for listening skills

As an HR professional with over 20 years of practical experience (and an Adjunct Faculty member at Portland State University) I have found the Glaser's new work to be useful, practical as well as entertaining reading. Their insights and examples have helped me craft class discussions concerning the power of actively listening to the words of others.

How to Communicate With Friend or Foe

Not only is the Glasers' book Be Quiet and Be Heard a book that will benefit all who use their proven successful communication methods - it's a great read. The language and style present their cogent ideas with examples, with clarity and with humor. I believe you'll enjoy reading this book while learning strategies that give you new skills in communicating with those you may consider friend or foe. It's a terrific book!
