Incest (Alma Classics), by Marquis de Sade

One of the most powerful and shockingly controversial novellas by Marquis de Sade

When the immoral libertine Monsieur de Franval marries and fathers a daughter, he decides to inculcate in her a sense of absolute freedom, an unconventional education that involves the two becoming secret lovers. But Franval's virtuous, God-fearing wife becomes suspicious and confronts him, setting off a tragic chain of events. Part of de Sade's The Crimes of Love cycle, this shocking tale tests the limits of morality and portrays the disastrous consequences of freedom and pleasure.

Please Disregard the Below, or, The Critique of the Critic
By Bryan Gibson
For artfulness alone, and pure freedom, or should I say boldness, of thought, the Marquis De Sade earns five stars for this work and everything else he's written (except of course "Oxtiern," which is, admittedly, dreadful). In this age of hum-drum prose, hacks, and politically-correct morons, Sade's works serve as much needed escapism. As for the below criticism, that Sade is overrated because he doesn't describe graphic sex--a comment like that only means its author hasn't read "120 Days of Sodom," or "Justine," or "Juliette"--whose lewdness would make even the devil blush.

Eugnie de Franval with a Racier Title
By J. Eggert
Originally published in English by Bantam Books in 1964 in The Crimes of Love book as Eugenie de Franval. This short story describes how one amoral man's plan to create the perfectly libertine daughter ends in disaster.

As one of de Sade's earlier works, it has the typical Justine character in Madame Franval. Pious, loving her indifferent husband without question, and in all manners virtuous. The proto-Juliette figure is seen in Eugenie, raised to spurn religion, laugh at social customs, and to embrace vices. The third primary character is Eugenie's father, de Franval. It could be inferred that this character is portraying de Sade, trying to create the perfect woman, but failing in the end.

Unlike the 1000 page plus tomes of Juliette and Justine, this story does enable the reader to get the gist of de Sade's sophistry in a page or two, rather than the normal 10 page single character dissertations found in other writings.

Overall, a good introduction to de Sade, without the descriptive sexual escapades he is famous for, in fact a made for TV movie could be made without any editing due to content. If you are interested in this book, I would recommend purchasing the aforementioned "Crimes of Love."

A quick, deep read
By B. Varchmin
This is one of Sade's most well executed works. At its best his prose captures above all the heavy inevitability of real life. As in our lives, there are no miracles, no surprise rescues... only the unavoidable consequences of our actions. INCEST captures that reality and much more. In a way this is an especially philosophical work which very accurately portrays the power-dynamic between parent and child, and the relationship between man and local moral code. There is a spareness to Sade's writing here that will refresh those easily bored by the longwinded philosophical diatribes of works such as JUSTINE and JULIETTE. INCEST is a short quick-moving tale with all elements perfectly placed. A must-read for any fans of the Marquis.

Heroes of Olympus, Book One The Lost Hero: The Graphic Novel (The Heroes of Olympus), by Rick Riordan, Robert Venditti

Jason has a problem. He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently she's his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids." What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea--except that everything seems very wrong.

Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he's in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn't recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on?

Leo has a way with tools. His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What's troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all--including Leo--related to a god.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—Riordan's ever-popular mythology series that resonates so strongly with reluctant readers and those who yearn for action-packed adventure now have the option to follow the story in graphic novel format. If the traditional narrative version of The Lost Hero (Disney-Hyperion, 2010) hit the ground running, it is nothing compared to what awaits readers in a sequential art format. It takes fewer than 10 pages for the story to start with a [quite literal] bang, and it relents very infrequently thereafter. Powell does an excellent job of adapting the original story into pictorial format, hitting all of the high points and representing all of the major details in the drawings, so little is lost. For those unfamiliar with Riordan's storytelling, they will receive a healthy introduction to his easy-to-follow story lines that teach with great accuracy the mythologies that students will undoubtedly learn in the classroom but with such fun and ease that it will hardly feel like school. Readers who are new to reading comic books will be no less entertained; there are a few pages here and there that may make following the panels in order a touch challenging, but they will catch on quickly. It goes without saying that this book will fly off the shelves; Riordan, of course, has a ready-made audience, but he always does a good job of welcoming new readers, so this one is a must for both school and public libraries.—Trina Bolfing, Westbank Libraries, Austin, TX

Really a different approach to the Heroes of Olympus but I enjoyed seeing the characters and monsters come a live in colored comic book form. I could follow the story and helped bring back certain memories while reading the last book of this series. I'm still waiting for the last two books of the first series so hurry up.

Thank you you will enjoy seeing your heroes come to life.

Great comic
By wiredweird
Two things, playing off each other, make a comic great: a script that lives up to the art, and art that lives up to the script. It's distressingly easy to find each living down to the other. In this case, though, Riordan's story has proven, widespread appeal. But, more importantly for me, it has Powell's artwork. In March, he brought to life Congressman Lewis's experiences in the freedom marches of the 1950s and 60s. In his own work, like Swallow Me Whole, he achieves something unique: if comics (or 'sequential art,' if you must) represent a literature, Powell is among the first of its poets.

So, Riordan's story doesn't quite give him the beyond-sanity range of his own scripts, or the wrenching reality of Lewis's. Even so, the raw energy and borderline madness of normal teenage years, let alone paranormal, give Powell plenty to work with. Unlike the other work I've seen, this involved a colorist to enhance his rich ink drawings. It is an improvement, I think, but I'll never turn down Powell's unadorned B&W - and I'll never turn down his own writing underneath that very worthy artwork.

Riordan's story is more than passable (though I haven't read the original). Powell's artwork eases the transition from novel to comic script, and holds interest in itself. But, even with all these good parts going, I still can't give it that fifth star. A fair few comics in the last few decades have really pushed the medium, in what it says and how it looks. For all the goodness here, it doesn't quite push either.

Simple to read but huge errors
By Oh, it's her.
I have generally struggled with math classes, especially statistics, but this book was fairly easy to read.

The reason I rated two stars? There are some horrible typos and editing errors that completely change the formulas and make some of the problems unsolvable. The worst were in Chapter 14. I'll list them below for anyone else that has to use this book:

On page 497, in the formulas given for the A x B interaction for SS, the formula given is incorrect. The correct formula is on page 481.

The formula given on page 497 is: SSaxb = SSbetween treatments - SSa x SSb

The formula given on page 481 is: SSaxb = SSbetween treatments - SSa - SSb

For the problems of Chapter 14, Problem 10 on page 500 is completely unsolvable. Both N and G are wrong (Should be 30 and 210 instead of 40 and 120, respectively) but BESIDES that there must be some other error since after correcting those the problem was still unsolvable.

All of those errors were confirmed by my instructor.

Unbound book Paper too thin for a binder
By Krinn
I like the fact that it was less expensive. However the pages are so thin that when I placed the three hole punched papers into a binder, they tore easily. I didn't realize for $150 the book was not bound.

I do not mind that it was necessary to put the book in a binder, I just wish the paper was of better quality.

The best written statistics text I have ever used.
By Gregory Fox
This text is user friendly, contains lots of useful examples and led me to a much better understanding of statistics. It may lack a few descriptions of some stats test procedures, but that is minor when compared to the simplicity and readability and the constant updating that has led to a book of this caliber.

    Excellent book!
    By Jaybird
Nothing wishy-washy, no glossing over of sin. Just old-school Catholic spirituality. One thing to bear in mind while reading is that it was written over 100 years ago, in England. Very definitely "pre-Vatican II", and it's a breath of fresh air from the past!

    Two critical virtues....
    By Cary A. Cusumano
This book was okay. It was broken into two sections, obviously on patience and humility. I do believe it got across the fundamental message that spiritual growth can only happen once we empty ourselves of pride and self-love. However, I felt it was a little disjointed in its approach--perhaps if it were more direct in offering suggestions on how to grow in these virtues as well giving examples of how famous people grew in these virtues, I would have found more meaning in it overall. Still, though, a good book for meditating on two important and hard-to-achieve virtues.

The Great Pensions Robbery: How New Labour Betrayed Retirement, by Alex Brummer

No issue shames the New Labor government elected in 1997 more that the systematic destruction of Britain’s pensions system. When Labor came to power, some five million workers enjoyed "gold standard" defined benefit pensions—which paid them a percentage of final salaries—and Britain had the most robust system of private retirement provision in the world. That number has since collapsed to 1.6m, leaving millions of Britons facing an uncertain future and, in many cases, the grim choice of working until they drop or an impoverished old age. The past dreams of a cottage on the South Coast or wintering on the Med or in Florida have long gone. Award-winning journalist Alex Brummer goes behind the scenes to explain exactly what has been going on. What emerges is a shocking story of cynicism and inaction, in which a government bent on penny-pinching, a civil service cowed in to submission, and individuals more interested in their careers than public service have all taken a part in fatally undermining a 100-year-old system. It's also a story of breathtaking hypocrisy, where those in charge have feather-bedded their own pensions while destroying those of ordinary people. And, as Alex Brummer convincingly argues, we're only just starting to live with the appalling consequences.

Splendid study of capitalism's failure to support pensioners
    By William Podmore
Alex Brummer, City editor of the Daily Mail, has written a superb account of Britain's current pensions crisis and its causes. Before 1997 Britain's pension funds were solvent, with strong cash flows. £830 billion was invested in private pensions to meet future pension payments, more than the rest of the EU put together. We had the best occupational pension system in Europe. 90 per cent of private occupational pensions were final salary (defined benefit).

What caused the current pensions crisis? In 1997 the Labour government decided to remove the tax credit on dividends received by pension funds, which had allowed the funds to receive dividend payments tax-free. This was worth £5-6 billion a year. A fund receiving an £80 dividend, for example, could receive £20 of tax relief, which could then be reinvested in the fund to build up endowment for the future.

The Treasury and independent actuaries warned that this decision would push pension schemes into deficit, close down many occupational pension funds, and cut pensions. Brown ignored these warnings.

We now have a broken system of private provision and a state pension that is among the worst in Europe, supported by humiliating and complex means-testing. Labour opposed restoring the earnings link for the state pension. Two million pensioners are trapped in poverty.

By 2002, Britain's pension funds were paying pensioners on average 28 per cent less than in 1997 and final salary pension plans were nearly dead: two-thirds had been closed to new members. Most firms that cancelled these plans moved future retirees into money purchase schemes, shifting the risk from employers and shareholders to employees.

Thus Labour obeyed European Union diktats. The European Central Bank in April 2003 demanded `reductions in public pensions' and `measures to raise the effective retirement age'.

Later, Brown proposed a pension tax credit guaranteeing a minimum income, saying that it would cost £2 billion in 2004-5. His advisers pointed out that since half the population would at once be eligible for the credit it would cost more like £10 billion a year. Brown said, "We're only committed to pay the credit for the next five years. We can change it after that." The questions came, "But what about after? People save for 20 years for their pensions. They won't believe in you and they won't save. And what happens to their pensions after five years?" Brown ignored them.

The value of assets in life assurance and pension funds fell from 176 per cent of GDP in 1999 to 128 per cent in 2008. In January 2009 the Office of National Statistics calculated that the deficit in defined pension schemes - the heart of Britain's occupational pension system - was £194.5 billion.

The government also refused to bail out Equitable Life's one million plus pensioners, who include Tesco and Post Office workers, who lost out due to the government's regulatory failure and maladministration, although it bailed out depositors with RBS and Icesave.

The government bailed out the banks, but ripped off all our pensioners.

"Jessica, we're safe now.I have to catch my breath."Elizabeth bent over and placed her hands on her knees for support. They had just entered the woods, and she felt more secure under the blanket of darkness the trees provided.

"OK, but not for more than a minute," her twin warned.

"Any sign of the guards?," Elizabeth asked, taking in great gulps of the cool night air and resting a hand over her wildly beating heart.

"Not that I can see," Jessica answered, glancing around and squinting into the woods.

They had stopped in a small clearing, surrounded by tall, thick trees. The moon had risen, casting a cool white light over the weeds and shrubs of the small field. The clearing was carpeted in soft grass, which felt spongy beneath Elizabeth's satin shoes.Crickets sang, and somewhere a frog croaked. At any other time Elizabeth would have been soothed by the beauty of the night. But since they'd begun their escape, a concern had been weighing on her mind, and she could no longer deny its urgency.

"Jessica," Elizabeth began, "I know we decided that finding Jacques is the right thing to do, and I agree that he owes you an explanation, but . . . I really need to see Laurent.I can't stand the thought of him thinking I'm . . . we're thieves . . . and maybe he could help--"

Jessica cut her off with a swipe of her hand through the air."Elizabeth, the closer we are to the chateau, the more chance there is that we'll be recaptured.I just don't think it's worth the risk," she finished.

"How would you feel if a guy you really cared about thought you were a criminal?"Elizabeth was close to tears, and in trying to be quiet, her voice came out harsh and raspy.

Jessica nervously raked her hand through her hair. When she spoke, Elizabeth could feel the desperation in her words."And how are you going to convince Laurent you're not a thief if we end up back in the dungeon?"

Jessica was angry, but Elizabeth wasn't in the mood to go along with her twin."Jessica Wakefield, you are the one who badgered me into coming to Europe against my better judgment, right?"

    "I know, but--"

"And how many times have I gone along with your schemes in the past?"Elizabeth interrupted.

    "A few," Jessica mumbled.

"A few?Let's see, there was the time you stayed out all night and I had to cover for you the entire day because you couldn't drag yourself out of bed," Elizabeth began, ticking off her fingers one by one."And then there was the time at camp when I had to compete in all your color war events . . . need I go on?"

Jessica held up both hands in a classic defensive posture."OK, OK, I get the point.Enough with the guilt trip!"

But Elizabeth was warming to her subject and refused to let her twin off easy."You do this to me all the time! You beg and plead until I do what you want, then when we end up in trouble, you're no help at all!Now I want just one little thing, and you have to go all logical on me!How can you let me down like this?

"Good grief, Liz," Jessica said, grabbing Elizabeth by the shoulders."Enough already. So we'll go back and try to see Prince Charming. But if we get caught, so help me, Liz . . ."

Elizabeth was exhausted by her tirade, and she gave Jessica a tired smile."Thanks, Jess."

Jessica let her go and shrugged."I had to do something to get you to shut up.I bet every guard on the island heard you," she said grumpily. She grabbed Elizabeth by the wrist, and they started back to the chateau.

As they trudged across the grass Jessica grumbled under her breath, "We came all this way . . . now we have to go all the way back . . . and for some drippy prince. . . ."

Despite their awful situation, Elizabeth was having trouble keeping her laughter in check."Oh, Jessica," she finally said."Nag, nag, nag, all the time."

They broke from the woods and approached the chteau silently. The ballroom was easy to find.Music filtered across the lawn from the partially opened, tall windows that were blazing with light.

With Jessica close behind, Elizabeth crept to one of the windows and peered inside. All the women wore ball gowns, in every color of the rainbow.Precious jewels glittered on each throat and around every wrist. Some of the ladies carried fans, which they flicked back and forth as they floated around the room. The couples who weren't dancing lined the walls, laughing and talking in a carefree manner.Almost everyone was holding a glass of bubbly champagne.

There were so many people whirling around the dance floor, Elizabeth could barely make out their faces. Then a tall, dark-haired guy twirled past, and Elizabeth gasped. It was Laurent. And he was dancing with Antonia . . . and smiling! How could he?Did he care so little for Elizabeth that he could carry on as if she didn't exist?

What I wouldn't give to trade places with that disgusting Antonia! Elizabeth thought desperately. That should be me in that gorgeous, fairy-tale dress, dancing in Laurent's arms! And Antonia in the dungeon! She smiled wryly at the thought of Antonia shivering in the cold darkness of that musty cell.

Antonia was wearing a smug look of triumph on her face that made Elizabeth want to scratch her eyes out.She felt a sob catch in her throat at the frustration of it all.A tear rolled down her cheek.

Jessica abruptly pulled Elizabeth away from the window.

Elizabeth whirled around to face her sister.

    "Oh, Jess, did you see--

"Forget about the couple of the century for a minute," Jessica interrupted quietly, squeezing Elizabeth's arm reassuringly."We have company."

Elizabeth's heart froze as she expected to see a troop of guards coming their way.

Instead she saw the three younger children standing behind Jessica.

"What are you three doing out here?"Elizabeth demanded, glad to have something to focus on besides Laurent and Antonia.

Pierre was scowling."Mademoiselle Elizabeth, why are you still here?"

Jessica rolled her eyes and jerked her thumb at Elizabeth, her mouth twisted into a smirk.

"Lovesick here had to have one last word with your brother," she said sarcastically in a stage whisper.

Pierre leaned over to the giggling Claudine and whispered a flurry of French into her ear.As his younger sister sped off into the chateau Pierre bowed to Elizabeth with a flourish of his little hand."I am not as handsome as my brother, but surely, mademoiselle, you have time for one dance with me," he said gallantly, deepening his voice.

"Oh, no," Jessica moaned."Are you crazy? Now I know we're going to get caught."

"No, pretty Jessica," Pierre said with a smile that was hauntingly like Laurent's."You are safe.No one even knows you are out of the cell."He held out his arms to Elizabeth, and she couldn't resist the sweet gesture.

Pierre actually danced well, which Elizabeth should have expected. As the son of European royalty, dancing was part of his education. He whirled her around rather expertly.

Jessica threw up her hands."The whole world is insane," she said, "but who cares?I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."And with that she picked up little Manon and began to dance too.

The music swelled and subsided, swelled and subsided as they glided through the steps of the dance.Manon was seized with fits of giggles, and Elizabeth saw her little hands gripping Jessica in a stranglehold around her neck.Pierre beamed up at her, seeming much older than six."You dance so well," he said to Elizabeth.

"Thank you, sir," Elizabeth replied primly."So do you."

"What about us?"Jessica insisted, dipping Manon so close to the ground, she squealed in delight.

"You two look great together," Elizabeth said, laughing."You know, Jessica, you should dance with more three-year-olds.It suits you!"

"Thanks a lot," Jessica said in her most sarcastic tone.

Elizabeth suspected that Claudine had been sent to get Laurent, and she hoped the little girl would hurry.Just one last word with her prince was all she wanted, then she didn't care what else happened!

A GREAT BOOK! Sweet Valley Is Great yet Again!
    By A Customer
After reading this book, I felt like i was actually in Paris! This was a way romantic story, with a great plot. Thats so mean of Jacques, how he sets Jessica up with the jewel and everything.. but its so sweet how he apoligizes at the end! If i ever went to france, i would want my vacation to be exactly the was this book was! Anyway, this book was totally romantic, full of action, and great for any fairy tale lover! I totally recomend it!

    By A Customer
Once again, here is another great Sweet Valley High book! This is a romantic and exciting one, with the twins in Europe! If you like SVH, you're gonna like this one, but be sure to read the other 2 as well! By the way, I TOTALLY reccomend, Sweet Valley High, Senior Year, starting with "can't stay away". But i am curious, does Elizabeth ever see Laurent again or remember him? LoL kay ash! its a book!

Indian Runner Ducks are often referred to as the “penguin duck” for a very good reason indeed — they stand up and they run unlike any other duck you will ever see. To watch a group of these creatures running will make you laugh as they can be a funny bunch. With their amazing, unique personalities they can provide hours of endless fun and fascination for everyone. They really do have a way of bringing a certain calm and ‘otherness’ that is almost unexplainable. While the idea of having a runner duck can seem very interesting, you must remember that runner ducks do become extremely attached to their human caregivers and it is a decision you shouldn’t take lightly because it is truly is a lifelong commitment. This book takes you through all the essentials of having a runner duck at home. This book will inform you about the right breeding and keeping conditions to ensure that you have a healthy flock in your backyard. There are also several health considerations with ducks that I have discussed in detail in this book. My ducks make me laugh, every day. They are so funny, the way they walk and behave. I hope yours will make you laugh too! Topics covered: - The basics - Diet - Training - Pros and cons - Buying - Housing - Feeding - Interacting - Breeding - Eggs - Health ....and much more
