About the Author
CAROLE WADE  earned her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at Stanford University. She began her academic career at the University of New Mexico, where she taught courses in psycholinguistics and developed the first course at the university on the psychology of gender. She was professor of psychology for ten years at San Diego Mesa College, then taught at College of Marin and Dominican University of California. In addition to this text, she and Carol Tavris have written Psychology; Psychology in Perspective; and The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective. Dr. Wade has a long-standing interest in making psychology accessible to students and the general public. In particular, she has focused her efforts on the teaching and promotion of critical-thinking skills, diversity issues, and the enhancement of undergraduate education in psychology. She chaired the APA Board of Educational Affairs’ Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology, as well as the APA’s Public Information Committee; has been a G. Stanley Hall lecturer at the APA convention; and served on the steering committee for the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology. Dr. Wade is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the Association for Psychological Science. When she isn’t busy with her professional activities, she can be found riding the trails of northern California on her Morgan horse, McGregor, or one of his Arabian stable mates, Condé or Ricochet.

 

Carol Tavris earned her Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary program in social psychology at the University of Michigan, and as a writer and lecturer she has sought to educate the public about the importance of critical and scientific thinking in psychology. In addition to this text, she and Carole Wade have written Psychology; Psychology in Perspective; and The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective. Dr. Tavris is also coauthor, with Elliot Aronson, of Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts; and author of The Mismeasure of Woman and Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion. She has written on psychological topics for a wide variety of magazines, journals, edited books, and newspapers, some of which have been collected in Psychobabble and Biobunk: Using psychological science to think critically about popular psychology. Dr. Tavris lectures widely on topics involving science vs. pseudoscience in psychology and psychiatry, on writing about science for the public, and many other subjects of contemporary interest. She has taught in the psychology department at UCLA and at the Human Relations Center of the New School for Social Research in New York. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a charter Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science; a member of the editorial board of the APS journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest; and a member of the international advisory board of the Institute for Science and Human Values.

A up-to-date textbook with great content

This is a textbook for my Psychology course and I love the convenience of being able to purchase it on Kindle for about the same price my school store would have charged for a paperback. I did not know I could get MyPsychLab as a package deal, but that is okay. I am working with the site to try and get them tied together somehow. I later purchased a code from Amazon, but apparently it was not the right one and didn't work. $20 down the drain and I ended up paying another $55 on the site for access. MyPsychLab was not a requirement, but it is very helpful, especially the videos and interactive parts.

the material was great and easy to comprehend

The reason I am giving this book such a low review is because it was only compatible with my iphone. That being said, I had to read for class and do my work on my iphone 6 screen which was difficult. It was not compatible with my tablet or computer and they are both less than a year old so it wasn't the devices. It was extremely difficult to do work in my class with those issues so I would make sure it works on what you have before purchasing. Other than that, the material was great and easy to comprehend.

Cosmetic Failure

Fast shipping but the book was a mess!!! I know I'm only renting but I figured of I am paying tons of money to rent it then I could at least receive a presentable looking book that doesn't have crumpled up pages and rips all over the place. I just don't want to be held responsible for a cosmetically damaged book. I've rented from other places that would not rent books that look a mess. I definitely won't be renting from amazon again, although I still love the shopping site!

Memory by the Numbers

Kahana, an acknowledged expert on memory, provides a thoroughgoing discussion of some aspects of human memory. However, the book is quite limited in scope, being focused on formal models of phenomena primarily involving verbal learning. While the author incorporates a few brief sections describing insights from cognitive neuroscience, those unfortunately remain marginal to the thrust of the presentation. Also missing are any discussion of priming and implicit memory, procedural learning, the relationship between emotion and memory, or conditioning. There is also not much of an attempt to connect ecological aspects of human memorial competence with the laboratory models which Kahana indeed expounds with great erudition and insight. Readers will find very helpful expositions of a selection of issues relating to the classic models of memory research, but must look elsewhere for a comprehensive account of human memory.

A great introduction to the field

I'm new to the topic of memory and memory modeling, and found "Foundations of Human Memory" to be a very good introduction. The author alternates between discussing specific experiments on memory that have been done (most experiments involve having people memorize lists of items for later recall), and discussing different ways of replicating the same results using computer models, trying to discover how memories may be stored and accessed. The main thing to take away is that human memory can be studied by performing experiments that isolate very specific tasks - this is more about statistics and empirical observations than speculation.

The book doesn't cover much more than how lists of items may be stored and accessed in the brain (I imagine this is because it would be hard to perform experiments on broader functions of memory). I got stuck on the introduction to neural networks for a bit, but that's just because I'm not that great with math and really wanted to understand what the author was saying in depth before continuing. Otherwise, the tone is pretty straightforward and readable.

A Book on the Art of Looking Good Naked!

For those of us who just want to look good and build the superhero/Spartan/gladiator physique, this book is a Godsend. Most exercise books have too many exercises to choose from, which is very confusing to those of us who are beginners. This book sifts through the thousands of exercises that are out there and showcases only the ones that build muscle.

Some of the exercises build up muscle all over your body, while others build up specific muscles, what the author calls "pivot points." The author explains pivot points as muscles located in strategic spots on the body that, when developed, give you the classical V-taper. So not only does the book showcase muscle building exercises, but it also explains why you would develop certain muscle groups and how to target them for aesthetics.

Some of the other things I learned from this book:

-How to create high muscular tension throughout the entire range of motion
-How to group exercises together to hit a single body part and make it grow (this gave me awesome pumps in the gym BTW)
-What reps each muscle group responds to (this part was educational, since I've never seen this information anywhere else)

This is an awesome book for both the beginner and the advanced lifter who lifts solely for looks. There is a lot of training information in it, so the book may be a little overwhelming for the beginner. But I found that I could easily apply the exercises and training techniques in the gym.

His best book yet!

I have every one of this guy's books, and I can say that this is definitely his best one. What marks this book different from his previous books is that this volume has numerous exercise photos, so you're shown how to do these exercises. If you're interested not just in building muscle, but building a physique similar to that of a gymnast's (wide shoulders, lean muscular arms, ripped abs) then this book is a must have. The author showcases a wide variety of exercises that build muscle from a variety of angles. I learned quite a few new exercises which I had never seen before. I tried some of these exercises in the gym, and they definitely gave me an incredible pump.

The author also introduces some interesting training concepts in this book. He shows you how to pair up and group exercises together so that you can extend the tension on a muscle so that it grows. He also talks about a concept called pivot point training, and shows you a diagram of muscles to target that will give you the muscular V-taper look. The author also lays out the best rep ranges for each muscle group, as each muscle is made up of different fiber types.

A great book for the exercise enthusiast who wants that extra edge.

A must have for the body-builder at any level.

I was excited to hear about this book from the author's website so I ordered it and was not disappointed when it arrived. The contents are laid out in a straight-forward manner with easy-to-read charts and programs. Beginning with a brief, but all-important note on determining your goals - do you want to build bulk, symmetry, definition? - followed by chapters on the importance of tension in building muscle fibers, and a very informative chapter on the types of muscle-fibers found in each body-part, and the most effective weight/rep ratio for each. There are also some extremely important chapters on how to utilize your exercise regime in order to get maximum, extended tension from each exercise. These informative chapters suggest the most effective weight/speed/rep/set/ ratio that may be required for optimum muscle building.

In the main body of the book each body-part is discussed in detail - each body-part being given its own chapter. Each recommended exercise is accompanied by illustrations and a detailed written description of the correct form to use. Additionally, each chapter provides a detailed workout chart that recommends a specialization regime for each body-part.

An altogether highly informative work that is perfect for home weight-trainers like myself, and gym trainers alike. The high-tension information, the targeted workout regimes, as well as the "6 factors program" discussed at the end of the book, have all helped to change the way I work out for the better, and I feel as though I am able to get more out of each rep/set/exercise than I was before.

An excellent work and a must-have for anyone serious about building muscle.

Evans and Herzog, both professors at the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY, present ten essays on a wide range of topics, from the racial integration of the sport to the role of women and baseball. Thank God for Baseball

I expected a review of the phenomenon of baseball in American culture. What I didn't expect was good scholarship and fine theological reflection! Both are there. The essays are wonderful and examine the parallels between Christianity and baseball from the perspectives of history, ethics, and hope. Read it before your next trip to the ball park!

Complicated but compelling

I wound up picking and choosing chapters of this book because often got lost in the theological issues. The chapters on Jackie Robinson and Rickey, Christy and Pete, and Shoeless Joe were very interesting. My own father was a young mill league player in 1919 and even though I was a "girl" he loved to share with me the stories of the glory days of the game. This book brought much of him back.

While I have always been a strong supporter of Title IX, I'm not sold on the interest among women to play professional baseball. Likely the WMBA among other pro groups are more compelling interests for our gender. Not really my call, but the ladies really did not convince me of the need for a pro ladies league.

Admittedly I had to make myself stick with the "Old Man and the Sea" along with the other theology based chapters, I just could not wrap my brain around some of the reasoning. No matter, I'm of the opinion that we do need to attempt to understand stuff that appears incomprehensible and challenging.

Now, let's get busy and get Shoeless Joe in the Hall of Fame. The book made a great rational case for righting a wrong.

A good book that did not quite meet all my expectations.

I read this book as I continue to develop my own theology of baseball. I enjoyed reading this book but wish it would have gone a little deeper. The author's main theological issue involves creating an inclusive kingdom which he compares with Jackie Robinson breaking through the color barrier in baseball. For a deeper theological connection, I suggest John Sexton's Baseball as a Road to God.

the best book published to date for our specialty

Hands down, the best book published to date for our specialty. Only wished it was released years ago, before I wasted so much money on other books in our specialty. No other book is even close to representing the information contained in this masterpiece. The diagrams & pictures are so detailed, a monkey could follow the instructions. Pure genius. If you don't own this book, you are wrong. A must have addition to your knowledge library.

VERY GOOD ATLAS FOR OUR SPECIALTY

The text is excellent. Well written and concise with outstanding diagrams and photos . It weighs about 20 lbs. It is available on Kindle but it's another $300 plus. I feel that it should be available on your personal Kindle if you purchased the hardback. That is the only reason for 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars but for over $300, the Kindle version should be available at no extra cost. It's an "at home book". I will update once I have read more of the book and/or if I have made an error and am indeed permitted to use the Kindle version. The other option would have been to make it a 2 or even a 3 volume set as a 6 to 7 lb book is easy enough to tote.

best book I have found. Pictures are amazing. The format is a step-by-step layout which I find the best way to learn, especially when reviewing surgeries prior to going to the OR. I find myself making my notes in a step-wise manner and this book nails it. Would highly recommend this.

About the Author
June Parsons purchased her first computer, an Apple II+, in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year she opened a successful small computer retail store with Dan Oja that also offered software instruction to children and adults. Dr. Parsons taught at the university level for more than 20 years. She holds a doctorate in Educational Technology and was certified by the ICCP in 1995. Dr. Parsons began writing and creating educational software for Course Technology in 1992. She contributed to the Windows for Business and Illustrated Series and developed the New Perspectives, e-Course, and Practical series. She works via the Internet with a team of highly skilled media specialists and desktop publishers located in various states and provinces.

An esteemed professional and respected author, Dan Oja, along with June Parsons, purchased an Apple II+ in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. What a great deal! I love renting for school because its never worth the price to buy.
Be sure you read the fine print, unlike me. There are A LOT of projects your instructor will assign which require the CD that is supposed to come with the book. Apparently with their used items "supplementary materials are not guaranteed". Mine was "Lost in transit" and they will not provide a replacement, but I was told that perhaps I could buy it from the manufacturer. Guess who can not do half of his coursework this summer without the good grace of his classmates.
Do not take the risk IMHO. rent it from your schools bookstore even if it is a little bit more expensive.
The book was in fair condition when it arrived and I am not being charged for the 'lost' CD so I guess that is nice.

Before he became a full-time academic in 2002, he practiced Internet law for eight years in the Silicon Valley. Unconvincing and unclear arguments for choice and responsibility

The author's thesis on free will is mostly incomprehensible to me. He says that at the individual level we don't have free will and in fact we don't even have a "self", and I agree with him. However, he says that at the social level (two or more minds interacting) people do have responsibility, they can make choices, and they are deserving of punishment. Why? Because of ... chaos theory, emergence, and downward causation, it seems. I'm not going to try and describe his argument fully here, because it would hurt my brain trying to write it out in a way that is comprehensible.

His argument is partly based on the idea of mental causation. This basically says that a current mental state can cause a future physical brain state. For example, if you are angry, that mental state can cause changes at the molecular level in the brain, in a "top down" fashion. This is in opposition to the generally accepted scientific idea that one physical brain state causes the next physical brain state via the laws of physics (which may include randomness), and that mental states are simply the result of underlying physical brain states. If mental causation makes sense to you, then you might agree with the author's thesis.

It seems that the author has fallen into a trap that many writers about free will have fallen. He believes that we "must" be able to make choices and take responsibility for things because that's how he feels and how most people feel at an intuitive and emotional level. As a result, he creates convoluted arguments that misuse ideas from modern physics to try and get to the conclusions that he needs to reach. He also annoyingly does not spell out his conclusions clearly, forcing the reader to do more work than necessary to make sense of what he is saying.

Though "free will" is in the title of the book, he probably devotes less than ten pages to directly arguing about free will. These rest is just explaining neuroscience to a lay audience. Some of it is quite good, especially chapter 3 on consciousness where he describes how the "self" is really just a fiction created by the mind. For this chapter I give the book two stars instead of one.

Much more than free will

As a reductionist this book provides a good view of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. To me the mystery of free will is yet unresolved. I accept as fact neuroscience accepts determinism as the rule, but from my viewpoint I exercise free will. It could be an illusion, of course, an yet Is a perfect fit for our elaborate selection process. This book is a must read!

Dry, but life changing.

This was a tough read because it it's highly technical and specific, but I'm so very happy that I took the time to get through it and learn so much about the mind and the brain.
I believe that knowing and understanding more about free will, where it comes from and what it really is, makes me a better neighbor, friend, patent, and spouse.
Scientifically fascinating and thought provoking.
