The Anatomy of the Ship Series Is Dead! Long Live the Anatomy of the Ship Series!

"Anatomy of the Ship" has long been one of my favorite book series, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to learn that the first new "Anatomy" in ten years was in the works. This book was originally intended for publication in 2008, but something must have fallen by the wayside. I was awfully disappointed in the "Bismarck" and "Constitution" anatomies, and was hoping that this book might breathe some new life into the series.

How is it? I'd say "pretty good" on the whole. It's not as extraordinarily detailed as some of the better "Anatomies," but it's a step above many of the weaker ones. The inside of the front and back covers are put to good use, presenting fold-out interior and exterior profiles of the hull, and two very nice paintings by Geoff Hunt. The biggest formatting change is the consolidation of the Introduction and Photographs chapters, reducing the amount of cross-referencing required compared with the other anatomies. "The Tudor Warship Mary Rose" contains a great deal more photographs and period artworks of the ship than earlier anatomies, including a large number of photographs of artifacts recovered from the wreck. The quality of the drawings ranges from exceptional to decent. The section on hull construction is probably the most detailed, right down to exploded views of gunport construction, cross-sections of a summercastle knighthead, and structural plans of each deck. Throughout the book are other examples of close-up details, including the lacing of bonnets to the mainsails, the rigging of the masthead of the ship's boat, and three-view drawings of nine types of rigging blocks. The final chapter even includes a set of plans depicting the remains of the ship as currently seen on display in Portsmouth, England.

As exciting as it may be to finally have a brand new "Anatomy," some of the plans are rather bleak looking and lack drawing keys. The plans of the standing and running rigging are probably this book's low point, consisting entirely of three unlabeled 1/192 scale profile views of the ship. The drawings of the ship's guns are very nicely done, but again, not a single one is labeled. I know that any seasoned maritime enthusiast should be able to identify parts of a ship's guns and rigging without any hand-holding, but I can't figure out why so many plans in this book are either completely unlabeled, or rather sparsely so.

Although some of the omissions are rather frustrating, I'm happy to see one more book in this series. In fairness, I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars. As an "Anatomy," this is somewhat of a middle tier title. However, there's enough interesting supporting material here to bump up my rating from three to four stars.

Gems, ordinary and sublime

Parents will find themselves nodding their heads and smiling at the stories Jason shares. This delightful book is a must-have book, perhaps to illustrate with our own photos. I could actually "see" the scenes and realized these are the gems of our lives, each dropping one by one into our lives, bringing joy and wisdom if we take notice. Jason has taken notice and helped up to do the same.

Relying on primary documents from Heeresgruppe Weichsel and Oberkommando des Heeres that are reprinted in their entirety along with summary translations, this new volume examines why the command came into existence, what was its priority compared to that of other commands in the East, and how that translated into men and material support for its combat divisions. Specific attention is given to the daily operational deployments of the Heeresgruppe divisions and how they were reconstructed after the brutal combat in Pomerania. The differences between Himmler and Heinrici’s command styles are examined and questions are raised about what, if anything Himmler contributed to Germany’s final defense. Hitler’s operational goals are also revealed for the first time through his daily guidance issued to the East Front field commands during the last month of war. Surprisingly, Heeresgruppe Weichsel and Berlin’s defense were not among his top priorities.

Operations of the 3.Panzer Armee are presented through the perspective of its three senior officers. The previously unpublished wartime diary of General der Infanterie Martin Gareis and the postwar interviews of Generaloberst Hasso-Eccard Freiherr von Manteuffel, and Generalmajor Burkhart Mueller-Hillebrand provide detail on the situation of the Armee through the end of the war and offer insights into key military and political personalities of the Third Reich.

A. Stephan Hamilton is the author of 'Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945' and the previous volume in this series, 'The Oder Front 1945: Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici, Heeresgruppe Weichsel and Germany's Final Defense in the East, 20 March -4 May 1945' (both published by Helion). He has spent the majority of his spare time during the last decade researching and writing about the final months of World War II in Europe. When not writing a book, he works full time and serves as a Major in the United States Army Reserves. He is a recent graduate of the U.S. Army Reserve's Command and General Staff College and holds a B.A. and M.A. in History. He resides in Northern Virginia with his wife and two children.

In particular, the additional cards I find it nice and clear. No original maps where you can barely see anything on .
There is also contains a CD which included all additional documents.

Finally a book that fills the gaps!

I have been programming in C# from its birth.��I’ve had the opportunity to teach many levels of C# throughout the years and as a result I’ve read a lot of programming books.��Most of them fall into one of two categories:��Learn a language - Step by Step or Learn a Language - The Definitive Reference.��While these books are good at introducing the reader to the language and promoting a ‘point in time’ level of understanding they don’t typically build a firm foundation for retaining that knowledge.��That’s where Practice Your C# - Level 1 fills the gap.��

Do you remember learning your addition and multiplication tables?��If you were taught like I was you were given a matrix of numbers where you could derive the answer using any combination of 0 - 9.��I was taught the Step by Step method of using the matrix and could later use it as a Reference when needed but it alone didn’t facilitate learning.��However, in addition to the number matrix I was given hundreds of worksheets with hundreds of examples that I had to answer.��It was these examples (typically building in complexity) that really cemented what was taught in class.��
