Shannon Trice-Black is currently a doctoral student in counseling education. Taylor was a school counselor for Wake County Public Schools in Raleigh, North Carolina. Good enough

As of 2009 there are not many alternatives to learn the powerful programming language Erlang and the OTP (Open Telecom Platform). This is THE book written by the designer and implementor of Erlang, Joe Armstrong and he seems to know what he is talking about. High quality humour may not be one of Armstrong's strengths but when it comes to finding attractive examples he shines using his favorite language and platform.

This may not be the perfect book, it has its problems such as promising that some things will be pointed out but the chapter ends without fulfilling it. A few minor frustrations aside the book provides a very good overview of the most important points of Erlang with enough breadth and depth. The chapter where Armstrong talks about a simple then adding transaction semantics, fault tolerance, hot code swapping, etc. is a kind of tour de force. Another good application is a Shoutcast server implementation in just a few lines of code. It would be very good to compare this example to Peter Seibel's Practical Common Lisp [1].

If you want to learn more about this kind of programming, I'd definitely suggest reading 'Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming' [2] which shows the Oz programming language and the Mozart platform and teaches the fundamentals of message-passing concurrency and network-transparent distributed programming.

Finally it must be repeated that Erlang has a very high-quality VM along with mature libraries for concurrency and reliability. If you want to experience industrial-strength distributed and / or multicore applications that scales well then it would be only wise to follow the advice of Joe Armstrong.

Warning: If you are not exposed to Lisp, Prolog, Haskell, Oz, etc. beforehand be careful for a different kind of syntax and semantics. You'll have unlearn a few concepts to understand the power of new concepts.

Good, But Not Great

There aren't a lot of Erlang books out there, so if you want to learn Erlang, you need this book.

However, I found the writing style a bit preachy. The organization of the book needs work, as the author is constantly referring to topics he hasn't covered yet. I also found that the index needs a lot of work, as it's missing quite a few topics that I know are in the book. The API reference also is missing some functions, which I thought was odd.

This book does a good job in promoting Erlang's ability to do concurrency well. I was hoping to get more functional programming style and mind set from the book, though.

All in all a good book to have if you want Erlang, but you'll need more if you want to really dive into functional programming or if you want a complete Erlang reference.

Functional introduction

To most of us, functional programming is either an academic pursuit, or a fun university pastime. However, with the trends towards multi-core and distributed computing, this paradigm is making a comeback, resulting in a lot of dignified "I told you so" arguments, which completely miss the point. It is not about one style versus the other, but rather about adapting the best of both worlds.

Erlang is pure functional language, and Joe Armstrong does great job of introducing the reader to the concepts, underlying libraries, and provides several non-trivial examples: IRC-like service, SHOUTcast server, and a full text-indexing search engine. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of the language or functional programming as a whole, the writing reads very easily, and you'll be up and running in no time.

I can't say that I'm writing Erlang programs all of the sudden, but I can say with confidence that I've picked up some very important architectural principles and an appreciation for the messaging-passing architecture. Great book, and highly recommended for any programmer.

Fashioning Fiction in Photography since 1990

Fashioning Fiction in Photography since 1990 is a collection of photographs curated by Susan Kismaric and Eva Respini, presenting photographers using narrative structures as a technique for fashion photography. This book showcases fine artists whose work has also been featured commercially, such as Philip Lorca DiCorcia and Tina Barney. Kismaric and Respini also provide the reader with a thorough introduction to the history of fashion photography and the context through which it has become such a prevalent art form today. The introductory essay also describes how the narrative world of cinema and the snapshot have influenced fashion photography over the last 20 years, giving artists an opportunity to change cultural attitudes. Kismaric and Respini also define the forces that have influenced the evolution of fashion photography. No longer is the fashion photographer's job simply to showcase the clothing through idealized members of an upper social class. Due to social change brought about by war, advances in technology, and the challenges of anti-establishment thinking, the world of fashion photography has become an important segment of mass culture. The group of photographers Kismaric and Respini chose to feature provides an overview of artists' work that is making an impact in the world of fashion photography but who also may not be art-world household names, such as Crewdson and Wall.

this book is great.

What a great book. I was a little hesitant over how I would receive and enjoy this book at first, but after having leafed through its pages several times now I realize that this is exactly what is cool about narrative art today. This book does not contain the fine artists Crewdson, Garfield, Wall, or the young Yale ladies, instead it surveys in many ways the influence these artists, and the movements they are following, are having on fashion photography. And vice versa. What I have to say is that many of the photographers I did not know of before opening this book are just as good as anyone out their.

Philip Lorca diCorcia and Nan Goldin are well known artists in their own right and you will see them in this book. DiCorcia's work is interesting in that this is not what I would expect to see in a gallery judging from his earlier work. But it is pretty interesting and a new avenue for the guy. The better showings by artists here are those I had never heard of. There is some twisted stuff here. Not violent, but subversive 1950's post modern irony.

... up right where the previous story left off and enjoyed the adventure along the way

The story picks up right where the previous story left off and enjoyed the adventure along the way. After reading this book I got the "Super Mario Bros." feeling. "Thank you for saving me but the princess is in another castle." As the previous story left on a cliffhanger, so does this one. I can hardly wait for the continuation of the story to see how Brinn develops or what new troubles await the hapless princess. Looking forward to Gatekeeper, hope it comes soon. If you are looking for spoilers read another review, I do not want to ruin the adventure that awaits you.

great second book

i have to say that i really enjoyed the book. at first, i didnt care since i found out ahead of time what kind of happens in a broad sense. but, as i kept reading i found that the book became really good. note, brinn is really not the central character of this book which was the reason i bought the first book. anyway, still a great read and im off to start book three. looks like there's going to be more than 3 books since i didnt see anywhere on the preview that the third book is the final book.

Excellent Book

The author has made a great effort of presenting the subject matter in an easy to understand and read format. The text covers basic laboratory determination of hydrogeological paratmers to complex calculations and modeling. This book is great because there have been times when I have been working on a problem (effective poristy, density and saturation) and have been able to find an example of it in this book. The text covers one dimensional steady state flow, transient flow, flow nets etc.. Cooper Jacob method, drawdown, well efficiency and numeric groundwater flow modeling. I highly recommend this book. Full of alot of great information and examples/problem sets.

This book does cover a good range of topics, but I find the delivery of explanations to be difficult to follow. This is partly the formatting of the book - it looks like the whole thing was done in microsoft word, complete with 'microsoft picture' drawings, but I think also find the manner in which concepts are communicated are neither fully comprehensive or completely abridged, leaving the reader in limbo between understanding the full first principles, to being baffled in a half-explanation. I just think the older books (Freeze and Cherry, Fetter, Huisman etc) cover the same topics but do it more elegantly. I got this book because its more recent than the aforementioned books - this would only be a benefit to the numerical modelling techniques that have developed over the past couple of decades, but again this book only treats the fundamental equations, which are set out in the earlier texts more clearly. For the budding nunmerical modelling, I'd recommend the classic texts plus manuals on the model you are using rather than this text. It aint bad, its just no classic.
