Not half bad - or, for that matter, half good...

Discounting the uninteresting or unusable parts (which still take up about half the book), The Complete Priest's Handbook is a pretty useful source. The main problem is in the half the book that's taken up by flotsam and fluff.
The reader from Detroit was very right in saying that "the... specialty priests are vastly underpowered compared to the priests in any other AD&D work"; hence why it's necessary to tweak and add to them extensively. The powers are also so restricting that they're worth ignoring entirely; the only thing they'll do is make dozens of AD&D pantheons clones of each other.
The main purpose of this book is to give some ideas on what gods may exist and what their priesthoods are like. If you do buy this and use it in your campaign, however, DON'T USE ANY OF THE SPECIALTY PRIESTHOODS AS IS... It would be an insult to priests everywhere!

Whoever wrote this hated priests

Where 2nd Edition AD&D endows fighters with the ability to (at first level) swing a longsword in each hand, potentially doing 28 points of damagae in a single round without counting Strength bonuses, the 2nd Edition Priests handbook cuts a Priest's power in half. I didn't find a single Priesthood that allowed it's followers to cast spells from all spheres, and many were reduced in combat ability. The special abilities added often come at the cost of the Priest's ability to Turn Undead creatures.

In short, ignore the sample priesthoods, or at least give them more spheres and/or abilities, if you want your players to still be your friends.

The rest of the book is good. It provides mythos creation guidelines, so if you don't wish to play in Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk, you can create your own pantheon and mythology using the guidelines in this book.

The kits are not all that great, one of them even relying on the heavily flawed Martial Arts system from the Player's Handbook. But with a little tinkering, you can use them. Just about everything in here needs a little work, but it's not unusable.

It's a good reference for DMs who are creating their game world. For players, they will probably get little use out of it.

Study Austen and develop critical thinking skills!

This is an excellent book for students and indeed any readers who need to develop their critical thinking skills while reading literature -- in the process of studying Jane Austen's novels. The author (Jones) elucidates her own approach to analyzing fiction, Austen's approach to writing, and common themes of Austen's novels. Then Jones discusses each of the major six novels in detail, briefly summarizing the plot and then analyzing about a dozen passages to show how Austen uses both narration and dialogue to clearly delineate character and theme. This book is not a thorough study of all the major facets of each novel, but it is helpful in learning how to closely read the novels, and understand the what, how and why of what Austen sought to convey. Recommended, especially to students of literature.

My daughter loves this book! We used it at the beginning of potty training, and gave the jewel stickers to her every time she went potty. We never used the chart, but it's a really cute idea. We read it most nights, and it gets her to use the potty one last time before bed without a fuss.

great reference - cd is pretty worthless

this book is a great reference for those who deal in any way with the human form. i, for example, am a 3d character animator and this book is perfect for nailing correct human proportions and visualizing range of motion. however, the accompanying cd is basically an advertisement for ErgoForms, the autocad version of the drawings in the book. only the 1% man drawing (the smallest average male figure)is included on the cd, which is pretty useless for what i need. if the book weren't so expensive i'd give it a four star rating. i thought i was getting more on the cd to warrant the price.

Awesome reference

There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.

Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.

Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.

Great book, Awful CD

The book is great. Information is presented clearly and is easy to find.

HOWEVER, I had really expected more from the CD. It DOES NOT CONTAIN DEMO SOFTWARE for a version of ERGOFORMS, it contains a couple of cad files generated by that program. Unfortunately, they are not particularly useful ones. (VELLUM, DXF and DWG files for a 7 year old child, 1% male, and 1% female.) As another reviewer points out, the CD is basically an advertisement.

If you want to buy this book for the info in the book, that's fine; it's a great book. If you are buying it because you think that there is something useful on the CD, I would suggest that you are making a mistake.

It reminds me of the musical Rent

I remember liking both The New York Four and The New York Five when I first read them. I had just finished reading Local and I was very happy with DMZ so this was just more Brian Wood greatness. I was impressed with the fact that he was writing about young women going to college in New York City, because frankly this is not something that gets addressed in graphic novels as much as it should.

Unfortunately, the years have not been kind. The first conceit that becomes grating is the New York Tourism trope that introduces every place. Every character is from New York and yet they are being introduced as types. The second major focus is the fact that almost every character is privileged to the point of 1% ridiculous and this shows when they are going to Williamsburg which is described as "once no man's land and now the place with the million dollar condos" as if gentrification is awesome (a strange trope too since Wood's first graphic novel doubled as a shriek against Giuliani). They don't struggle with the rent. They all get awesome SAT jobs that require psychological evaluation. The one character that is not from a higher income bracket acts slutty and then gets a story where she must take care of her bipolar brother in Queens.

Mostly, this feels like the musical Rent where New York City is one big party with dozens of night clubs and roof parties and no sense that anyone even has to work for a living. Hell, there is even the tragically sick "inspirational character" whose entire role is to embody New York street kids.

Unfortunately, that kind of superficial writing would be fine if the characters were interesting. But the characters are boring. Yes, they all have distinct arcs but I never get the feeling like they are real people so much as tropes. There's the Hispanic girl with the pushup bra (and the bipolar mother). There's the hipster blond with dreadlocks (who dates older men). There's the Asian (who is obsessed with her professor on the UWS) and there's Riley, the ostensible main character who spends the first part texting her older sister's boyfriend and the second part trying to get her older sister to forgive her.

The artwork is still great, but the story itself is subpar.

Engaging and intertaining

Compelling from the beginning until the end. Believable characters and clear drawings with plenty of details that add to the story plot. Would love to see a sequel.
