Vast, dry, term-filled volume with everything you want to know!

While others may rightfully complain that this book does not shy from intensive and abundant geologic terminology, this fact brings an immersion in the field to any reader with the will to learn it all. This treasure-trove of "rock-science" (petrology) is indeed vast, covering many possible occurrences, not just common modes and types. As an avid geoscience student, I have found this book to be a bit dry, but that has been countered by the seemingly complete nature of the book; everything I've asked a question about has been answered, sooner or later, by this book.

Although the book is dense, dry and exhausting, some students really desire this kind of book. Any serious geoscience student should not be dismayed by the complete nature of the work; having access to such a volume of information should not be upsetting!

Great book when compared to alot of other crappy geology books on the market. I wish there was a hardcover version ( there wasent when I ordered). But i guess that is what is keeping the cost down.

The subject is fascinating, but the prose is deadly

Don't believe it when they say readable. It is not actually UN-readable, but it is hard to believe any "informed general readers" actually make it all the way through. Which is a shame, since this is a very important subject.

Try "The Return of Depression Economics" by Krugman. It covers most of the same ground, and is extremely informative, but does it in a very readable fashion.

Timely Reading

"Recessions and Depressions" is a gem of a textbook. It's short and lucid, it combines theory and case studies, and it is refreshingly humble about the limits of economic knowledge. Best of all, the discussion of the role played by banking systems in the onset and propagation of downturns couldn't be more topical. Prospective buyers should know that the analysis is organized around various models of the business cycle (Keynesian, Monetarist, Real Business Cycle, New Keynesian, etc.) While the discussion is never mathematical or otherworldly, anyone who hasn't taken a basic econ class might get lost. However, that's to be expected in a textbook. Highly recommended!

This is by far the best book I have seen on business cycles. Other books are either too handwavy or too abstract and dry. This book is very precise and comprehensive and at the same time very readable and accessible. It is an excellent blend of theory and real world.

The book explains many theories of business cycles. Some of these theories are widely known, while some I have not seen else where. But all are explained very well.

The book also shows how these theories apply to real world events like the Great Depression, the East Asian crisis, the Argentina crisis, and the Japanese depression. All are excellent case studies.

Dave McKean has illustrated several award-winning comics, including the best-selling BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM (written by Grant Morrison), MR. PUNCH, Signal to Noise and Violent Cases (all written by Neil Gaiman), Slow Chocolate Autopsy (written by Iain Sinclair) and his own Cages. His collected short stories Pictures That [Tick] won the Victoria & Albert Museum Book of the Year Award, and his short film N[eon] won overall first prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival.

Great book, great cover, bad paper ... print quality is not bad but the paper is too thin for my taste. A real disappointment as it is an art book. Recommended to all fans of Dave Mckean but handle with care ...

Mary Nicholas, in this engaging and provocative book, explores the relationship between psychotherapy and the enhancement of goodness. She examines the field of psychotherapy, which frequently strives for moral neutrality, and explains how neglecting morality can actually stymie its goals. Goodness is defined here as concern for others and is represented by five generally accepted "virtues" - altruism, responsibility, justice, egalitarianism, and honesty. The process of psychotherapy is examined in light of how it may promote or diminish these attributes in patients. The first section, "Reconciling Goodness with Psychology and Psychotherapy," conceptualizes goodness in psychological terms. Section Two, "The History of Goodness," synthesizes various theories pertaining to goodness from the perepectives of science, developmental psychology, behavioral and social psychology, and psychoanalysis. The third section, "From Demoralization to Remoralization through Psychotherapy," discusses the moral aspects of different mental and emotional illnesses and their treatment.
