About the Author
Dr. Frank Kreith is a Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from the University of Paris in 1965. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and recipient of the ASME Medal. The ASME International established "The Frank Kreith Energy Award" in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the field of renewable energy and heat transfer. His areas of interest include heat transfer, thermal engineering, and solar engineering. He has been a consultant in the field of heat transfer engineering in many parts of the world.

Similar lawyers - Horace and Attacus

I had read this book several years ago and, of course, enjoyed Faulkner. The similarity of Horace and Atticus was not apparent to me at that time. Seldom do I read books the second time but Faulkner's works are an exception.

Tough read but worth it.

I read this book because I had never read any Faulkner before. I guess I thought I was missing something in my library or maybe it was time to lay off the nonfiction I mostly read.
I found Faulkner's style and word choices difficult at first. He assumes the reader is not lazy and will keep up with him and his stream of consciousness approach. I must admit I read half the book, became disinterested and put it down for several weeks. I then made up my mind to give it a second chance and really enjoyed it.
The story is dark and slightly twisted. There are very few admirable characters but I found myself sympathizing with most of the characters. Everyone except maybe Temple Drake has reasons for their misdeeds. I felt Faulkner was trying to convey the injustice of the time and just plain bad luck as reasons for the poor behavior or lack of optimism of the characters.
I highly recommend this book. It is gripping and real. The story got to me.

It does not Synerge: on Being Cheated Out of a Good Story

In "Wild Palms" it was a manifest literary technique, but in "Sanctuary" it's a desperate attempt to weave together a story from different plotlines. I am a Faulkner buff, and have always felt tricked by this one: everything that goes on at "the house" prior to the "event" (I'm trying not to give too much away) is some of the master's best. It is a world apart, relating not to "the south", as some wrote, nor to any other referent world; its inherent danger and unexpectedness and possibilities depend on that. Alas, the story then focuses on the character that it ultimately chose for its true protagonist, a well-intentioned yet incompetent lawyer (you'll recognize him from other works -- F really overplayed this character), and an uninteresting one at that. As soon as the narrative moves into the cities it looses its force, revived at times only by such comic giveaways as the provincial youngsters who frequent a brothel in Memphis, never realizing that they reside in another. I can almost imagine Faulkner cutting & pasting that from some draft, soberly thinking, "I got to liven this up a bit". And it goes from bad to worse. All that befalls Popeye after his last encounter with Red seems artificial; it recalls Hollywood's standards for treating villains, owing more to comodification of morality than to narrative integrity. Do we learn something about Popeye that makes him a more interesting character than in the first part? Hardly. Yet with all of that, the writing itself was rarely surpassed in American prose. Faulkner has that uncanny ability to get us involved in his nontransparent language all the while keeping it away from the fore, first and foremost using it to tell his story (as opposed to Joyce or Dickens). For that alone this book is a joy; but on the narrative scale one feels, ultimately, cheated out of a good story.

Illuminating & Informative

This book is a fascinating account of the historical significance of the city of Rome from the time of Christ and the early church, up through its influence in the present day, as well as Rome’s likely role in the fulfillment of prophecy still yet to come. The author (Riccardo Alicino) uses scripture references to illuminate the impact that Rome has had on the spread of the gospel around the world. He boldly confronts the sinful tendency to exalt the created above The Creator and he uses scripture to masterfully point the reader back to the person of Jesus Christ and to His saving work on the cross for the redemption of his bride, the church.

About the Author
STEPHEN WEIDENBORNER was a professor of English at Kingsborough Community College, City University of New York for over thirty years. He coauthored several other composition textbooks with DOMENICK CARUSO, also a former professor of English at Kingsborough Community College.

GARY PARKS is an English professor at Shoreline Community College, in Shoreline, Washington. He has been teaching composition, literature, and creative writing for almost 20 years. His research interests include online communication and distance learning, and he helped pioneer his college's first Web-based distance learning courses. A member of NCTE and CCC, he has given presentations at various assessment and distance learning conferences as well as at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity. He is a contributing author to the Bedford/St. Martin's VirtuaLit Fiction site and has had short stories published in several literary magazines.

Excellent reference tool

This book is an asset to any student who has to write the dreaded research paper.

Chapters are logically broken down by steps in the research process - from narrowing down your thesis to printing out the final draft. Entire chapters are devoted to one topic (such as how to revise your writing and citing your works), allowing for more detailed explanations (you'll even wind up knowing the difference between MLA, ALA, and Chicago-style formats by the time you're done).

I was very nervous when just thinking about having to write my paper but when I looked at the sample essays in the back of the book I said, "I want my essay to look like theirs" and got to work.

This is a clearly written, straight forward description of the process of writing a research paper. I have used various other texts and this provides all the information someone new to the process will need. It takes the reader step-by-step through the process of developing a thesis, hypothesis, reviewing literature and writing the paper. The sample research papers are clearly explained and wonderful examples of successful papers. I will be using this text in my college English class, especially since it provides all the necessary information in an affordable text.

A badly revised reprint of a previous version

The description of this book doesn't disclose it, and the "search inside" preview pages doesn't make it apparent, but this is a (badly) revised reprint of The Food of Sri Lanka ISBN 9625937609.[...] So if you have the latter like I do, don't waste your money on this "new" book.

Both books have the exact same recipes and exact same pictures.The difference is, they appear in a completely different order in this new book. This was a major overhaul in that the order of recipes got a major shakeup, and not just a few recipes being moved here and there. It's almost like change just for the sake of change. I can't see any special benefit or improvement from the new order except to make it "look like" a new book.

The old version had both the actual Sri Lankan name of each recipe and an English description of the dish as a sub-title. This book however completely did away with the Sri Lankan names. What idiocy! Now the recipes have weird non-identifying generic names such as, Sweet Coconut Slices, Coconut Spice Cake, Coconut Cinnamon Cashew Slices, Young Jackfruit Pickles... I can go on and on. If you just want an English description of a recipe, this book is for you. But to me, the disadvantages of this are two-fold: First, if you talk to a Sri Lankan and mention for example, Sweet Coconut Slices or Coconut Spice cake, they will have no clue what you are talking about. What's more, these names could fit several different dishes, so rather than talk about the food you wanted to talk about, you'll end up in a conversation of deciphering which dish you are referring to. Second, knowing the true name of a dish allows you to research further into any dishes that you like. For example, one can look for other versions of the same dish on the internet to see if you find something that you like even better. As is common, pretty much all traditional dishes of any country have several different versions of it, the most popular ones usually having as many recipes as there are cooks in that country. This is natural because traditional recipes are passed down through generations and not learned from a standard cookbook. But you cannot find any further information on most recipes you like with this book, because the actual names of recipes have been left out. So you'll end up searching for generic terms like "sweet coconut slices," which could not only describe several different Sri Lankan dishes, but also many dishes of other nations.

I haven't bought the other 'new' books of this series, but I can only guess they have the same "improvements" done to them. This is why I think this book was badly revised and this is a case of not leaving what is already good, alone.

My copy is going back to Amazon. I hope they cover return shipping as the description failed to disclose that this is a rehashing of a previous version of the book. If they don't, at least I hope this review will prevent another person from being mislead into thinking this is a new book on Sri Lankan cuisine that they do not own.

If the publisher just re-printed the books of the old series, most of which are now out of print, they would have done a much better, and cheaper job of it.

A fantastic simple guide to recreating some of the great food we enjoyed when travelling all over the beautiful country. A chefs book really as you have to improvise and add ingredients to cover for the simplistic list and cooking instruction but a go-to book for inspiration.

Forced to go against other Hunter vampires, she is backed into a corner where her only way out is to fight, or die trying.

This is Tori's story by W.J. May. It is book 2 in the Daughter of Darkness; Tori's story. As a courtesy, the author wishes to inform you this novella does end with a cliffhanger. The next book coming out in early Autumn (or sooner) will continue the story.

Does not disappoint!

This series is amazing. A new take on old character types. The plot keeps flowing, the storyline is consistent, and the characters continue to grow and develop as they should . Don't think about becoming complacent while reading this...it's not going to happen!
W.J. May is an amazing author, whose writing has yet to be a disappointment. Absolutely love the book, and can't wait for #3!

I am loving this series! It just keeps getting better and better. Victoria is a bada** huntress who comes to realize that she has been played by her father her whole life. She learns many things about her family and friends that change everything. She finally opens up her heart but is it too late? I can't wait to read Coveted, the next part of the series!

Tori is a good vampire hunter but she finds out one she hunting is her sister and let's her go. Her dad finds out & is hunting her now. He's determined to find her at any cost. Can she stay hidden?
