Taming Wild Chess Openings: How to Deal with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly over the Chess Board, by John Watson

No matter how unconventional, irrational or even crazy an opening is, sooner or later every chess player will have to face it. When that happens, you can count on a well-prepared opponent who is more than happy to roll out his pet line.
John Watson and Eric Schiller provide club-players with solutions to a huge selection of these rarely-played or tricky chess openings. They concentrate upon ideas and strategy, with enough analysis to satisfy the needs of practical play.
Only when a sharp reply is required, Watson end Schiller will recommend a more complex variation filled with tactics. In the vast majority of cases they present a simple and safe way to approach the position, requiring little memorization and still leading to a promising game.
There is a lot of fun material in this book, and you may be surprised to see how even strong grandmasters have indulged in the craziest variations. Chess isn't all main lines and 20 moves of theory!

Review
"A very handy reference work for the club player and the source to turn to in a bid to avoid losing once again to gambit x from the chap you always encounter in the Friday round of weekend congress." (British Chess Magazine)

"Contains every crazy opening you can think of. Strangely enough, it also has normal gambit openings that are quite playable but which the authors find ugly. And some weird openings that are good, but those are a small minority (..) A very funny book." (Johan Hut Noordhollands Dagblad)

"Gives a good line against all the wild and wacky variations. It is fascinating to read about so many gambits that I had forgotten or never seen before. A treasure trove of brilliant ideas that will benefit all tournament players." (Gary Lane, International Master Chess Moves Magazine)

"All in all a funny, albeit somewhat bulky, book - especially for the club player who finally wants to kill the Grob of his fellow club member or is looking for something crazy to use in blitz." (Max Euwe Center, Amsterdam)

"A lot of crazy chess openings that are only suitable for bullet chess if you ask me, but at the end of the book there are 80 pages or so with more serious lines such as the good old Evans Gambit." (Elburg Chess Reviews)

"A splendid and bulky book, both for those who wish to try out something funny and for those who don't want to be unpleasantly surprised." (B.H. Wilders Netherlands Dagblad)

A goldmine of Interesting Ideas over 400 pages
By Carl Armstrong
I have several books by John Watson all of which are excellent.Unfortunately that's not the case with Eric Schiller. His early edition of 'Unorthodox Openings' I like however, and the combination of Watson; who always gives clear plans and objectives to reduce memorization, plus thorough analysis of important main lines, plus Schillers extraordinary knowledge of Unorthodox Openings, make this book excellent for club players, students, and masters if they are flexible and use discretion when employing these ideas. The reason I don't give 5 stars is because they left out 2.Na3 against the Sicilian with which Vadim Zviagintsev beat Khalifman (who burst out laughing then resigned 37 moves later) and Ponomariov. Also the Closed Sicilian with 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g4!? a specialty of GMs Kavalek and Vokac.

There is an abundance of interesting ideas you can use at your next tournament. For example:A little known Defence against the Sicilian Morra Gambit:1.e4 c5 2.d4 cd4 3.c3 dc3 4.Nc3 e6 5.Nf3 Bc5!? is barely mentioned in the 2 latest books advocating the Morra. And against the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit: 1.d4 d5 2.e4 de4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 c6!? 5.Bc4 Qa5!? or 5...b5!? will probably take your opponent by surprise. Then there's the Korchnoi Attack against the Dutch: 1.d4 f5 2.h3!? and several near refutations to both the Cochrane Gambit of the Petroff and the Albin Counter Gambit. These are but a few of the many interesting ideas contained in this book, which also covers taking the sting out of popular openings like the Evans Gambit and Colle System.Quite a bit is devoted to 1.Nc3 including the interesting Morozevitch/Kasparov encounter.

The reason why Spassky beat Fischer with a Kings Gambit in 1960 is because Fischer was expecting a Ruy Lopez. This book is therefore a must have for club players that are flexible in their opening choices.
