About the Author
John Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and research consultant. He is the author of the long-running New York Times bestseller, Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School. He is an affiliate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research at Seattle Pacific University. Medina lives in Seattle, WA, with his wife and two boys.

Usable and research-based

I am an educational specialist and in addition have a BA in child development. I read several books on early parenting looking for one to share with my husband as we are expecting our first baby. I was dismayed to find that most books I read had very little to do with the science and research we know about brain development. This book is the exception! I have learned a great deal from it! My husband, who does not come from a research background, is also enjoying it. I really like the way that the author starts each chapter with the most important points and closes each chapter with the same. It allows for a close reading or a quick scan. In others reviews, people have called the information in this book common sense. I wish this were true, but as someone who works with many loving and well meaning families, I can tell you this is not my experience. This book will make your child's life better.

Good but read Nurture Shock instead

I enjoyed this book and liked how the author organized the information. I would certainly recommend this for parents because it has a lot of good information about a baby's brain and some practical suggestions for how to foster their development. I only give it four stars because I thought the book Nurture Shock, which has the same premise, was superior. Nurture Shock was more formal and seemed to achieve more depth (although still accessible and readable), whereas Brain Rules had a jocular tone and included a lot of examples from online parenting forums that I didn't find useful. It isn't that the science was bad, in some ways it was more thorough than Nurture Shock because it went into neuroscience in greater depth in addition to psychology, but I found myself skimming sections of this book while I was rapt when reading Nurture Shock. Admittedly I had read Nurture Shock first, so Brain Rules was largely redundant. If you're going to buy one I'd strongly recommend Nurture Shock for its more thorough and mature explanations.

Data Backed Information for Raising Your Child

I'm a first time mom and wanted information regarding how to raise a happy child. So many books are written based on opinion or psedo-science. For example, should children watch TV? Some people say yes, some say no. Which is correct?
This book presents empirically-backed information. The research says no, don't let your child watch tv. This is very helpful, because it lets me know the information I need. (Also, the book goes into detail about how the research was obtained, so you can see how the studies were undertaken.)
With so many parents spending so much time and money on trying to raise a happy, healthy child, it helps to have some guidance as to what is worth looking into more. Ok, so children shouldn't watch tv, now I can look past the "Baby Einstein" series and go onto the next thing. This book shows the research on the importance of music in a child's life (playing an instrument). Ok, so now I can look into piano lessons.
When I recommend this book to other parents, I get the dirty looks of "no book can tell you how to raise your child". Yes, or course no book can tell you how to raise YOUR child. But a book can give you some very black-and-white, research backed guidelines on things to pay attention to. Also, once you have the information, you can chose to ignore it, but at least now you have the data needed to make an informed and smart decision.
As a science person, I want to make informed decisions based on data. Decisions for my child are the most important decisions I will make in my life. It's really awesome to have some cold, hard data to help me in my informed decisions.
I will be buying this book for all my pregnant friends from here on out. Also, I have already gone back and referenced specific sections of this book.
