About the Author
Don Taylor grew up in the auto trimming business: his father was a trimmer, Don is a trimmer, and his two sons were trained as trimmers as they grew up. As an expert author, Don created the Automotive Upholstery Handbook for California Bill’s and has written six other automotive books on engine rebuilding, restoration and paint and body work.

Good book showing many techniques - starting to get pretty outdated

What I really liked about this book for someone like me who has never sewed before is that the first 40 pages are dedicated to teaching you what tools and equipment you need, what materials, and the techniques for sewing auto upholstery.
The first simple project is a stadium seat with a zipper and the author tells you if you can do that one you can do most everything else in the book. It's probably not true, but he does progress from that relatively simple project to the more complex ones.

It has sections on various auto seats, boat seats, convertible tops, door panels, headliners and many more - all with many black and white photos. I would call it descriptive rather than step by step, but the descriptions are detailed enough to enable doing the projects.
There are chapters dedicated to vinyl, landau tops, and simulated convertible tops, as well as a section on Van interiors and the motorcycle seat project looks like something from the 70's, all of which makes the book look somewhat dated. Mine says it was published in 2001, but it wouldn't surprise me if that isn't a 2001 update to something that was originally done in the 80's - I think a more comprehensive update would have some additional modern projects and get rid of the old ones. .
It was still a useful book for me - especially the beginning chapters.

I'm a weird guy - I enjoy reading instructional manuals

This is a BEGINNER'S book, therefore I'm basing my 5-star review from a beginner's perspective.
I'm a weird guy - I enjoy reading instructional manuals. As far as manuals go, this one is pretty darn good. I've read it so far, cover to cover. I DO like the slow-going nature of Mr. Taylor's explanations - I am not new to sewing stuff but I'm new to auto upholstery (doing over my '66 Lincoln and want to do it all myself...yeah, I know, a total gangsta car...it kicks ass...I'll send pics.)
So far this book is confidence-inspiring. I do like the different sections that start with basics and move forward to more advanced topics. I would like to see a bit more detail on technique, though I'm thinking I'll learn this as I go.
Something I've learned so far - bite the bullet and get yourself an older industrial machine with the proper walking-foot to evenly feed material and give you consistent stitches. All is for waste if your finished project looks like shazz, right? There are options online for second-hand machines...look for them.
As for the book, it's well-worth the twenty bucks or so that I paid...I'll use it for years.

Very Good Trade Reference Book

I do mostly marine upholstery for a living, but have a fair amount of customers asking about their car seats, so I bought this book.
It's good for beginners as well as those who have experience in other forms of upholstery as well. He's clear and concise in his explanations. The picture are ok (they're in black and white), and I would say that the book is a little bit dated. I wish there were examples of more modern seats. Hopefully there will be a revised edition in the future.
The basics will always remain the same, however, and you will learn lots from this book, including how to sew on an industrial sewing machine.
If you want to learn auto upholstery, then this is the book you need to get started.
