The thing that bothered me the most is the author's view on the origins of the band and especially the writing of Kill em All. If you believe the author James the only member of the band that had any real talent, Lars, was an OK drummer with a lot of energy and knew a lot of people, Ron, had finances and a place to live and practice, Mustaine was a good guitarist.
The authors also makes you believe that James wrote all of kill em All with little to no help from the others. The author does not simply minimize Mustaine's influence but white washes it!
James is a great talent but this was a little too much!

So Let It Be Written is the definitive word!

I’m only a casual fan of Metallica, but I love biographies – and especially books about rock and pop musicians. To give you some context, I read a book of Gram Parsons before this and the next book in my queue is about The BeeGees. This touch of thrash in between is just what I needed!
Having followed Metallica’s music from the very beginning but losing interest after the 90s, I learned a lot: So Let It Be Written covers every era right up until now. Since the media tends to cover the more colorful members of the group (Lars, and Mustaine) there’s much I didn’t know about James. He struggled a lot in his childhood, and suffered some real tragedies, which, it seems, led him to be so driven to succeed. The author covers all that, but not in an exploitive way (it’s an unauthorized biography, but feels like it is). I enjoyed the scholarly, journalistic approach to James’ story. It’s respectful, but not fawning. There are tons of interviews, plus rarely-seen photos.
I’m amazed there’s never been a biography of James Hetfield before… and there probably won’t need to be another one – So Let It Be Written is the definitive word!
